i don't understand why in the last decade, the movies voted for best picture have to be ones that no one has seen. It seems as though there is never more than 1 or 2 at the most that were major releases. I'm not saying that less viewed movies can't get nominated or that box office numbers decide things but come on. 10 years ago and before nearly every movie was one people has seen. This just futhers the idea that it is a bunch of rich elitists giving awards to themselves.
That's a good point...but I think it what hector said below has a lot to do with that too.
Because at a time when movies haven't been as strong as they used to be, it was a gem. It was non stop action, and very well done. I won't consider it one of the greatest movies ever, but in the last 10 years or so, its one of the better movies
That does make sense...most movies made today are simply mindless popcorn entertainment. And sadly, most people don't go back to watch the classics.

Exactly, look at horror movies, most of them are remakes or carbon copies of each other.

Ok. Ive seen most of these movies and have a few thoughts.
Best Picture- Dark Knight should be on there instead of The Reader. However TDK should not win. (Slumdog) Also Wall E should have been nominated.
Supporting Actor- Heath deserves the Nomination and the Oscar. He was amazing in TDK. Honestly Im rooting for Downey Jr. But I think Heath will get it and not because he died.
Because people are stupid. They nominate the best movies. The average person however would rather see a movie with two pretty girls arguing over there wedding day, or a fat guy fall down over and over again. It's not there fault people are not seeing the nominated movies. The average consumer has gotten stupider over the years. The movies are available for people to watch, has nothing to do with elitism.

Just watched The Wrestler the other night...had no clue Rourke & Tomei would be nominated, but it was a very good film. It's pretty depressing, but definitely worth watching.
Heath Ledger was amazing as Joker and deserves his nomination. However The Dark Knight is not even close to the best movie ever made. It's awesome no doubt, but let's not get carried away. Should it have at least been nominated?....yeah, probably
I honestly can't believe Downey Jr. was nominated, but I think he deserves it as well. He's perfect in Tropic Thunder. "I don't drop character til we film the mother***** DVD commentary!" that movie would be wack without him in it.

I've seen Benjamin Button. Very good movie. Tropic Thunder is terrible, but I guess Downey did good. I thought it was someone else for awhile!
As for Heath Ledger, I have to strongly disagree with you. He was incredible in the movie, and I'm certainly not a star-struck girl! In fact, I think it's a runaway that he'll win. Yes, there's an aura around the situation, but Ledger was completely engrossed in the roll.

I thought Eastwood deserved a best actor nod for Gran Torino.
Would that be for the 2009 Oscars though? It was released in January wasn't it?

Official release date is December 12th. Limited release then. Wide release was January 9th. A lot of Oscar films have limited releases and expand once the film begins to generate more Oscar buzz.
