I dunno about long term. There will always be card makers, though the names may change.
But hobby shops have all been in steady decline since the '90s. There used to be dozens of shops around where I live, and several within just a few blocks of my house. Now there's two within a 300 mile radius, and one of them turned more into a pawn shop that sells sports cards.
Unfortunately, in this climate, singles are not going to drive sales anywhere but online. Packs are all my local shop sells with success, and the margin is thin. The Hobby shop, I'm afraid, is going the way of the Arcade.

I agree about the shops there's only one here and it is combined with a coin shop. And I think especially card shows are declining, there used to be monthly small shows and quarterly mall shows here in central Illinois, now the monthly shows are gone and the mall shows are pale reflections of what they were.
It's the first I've heard of UD's troubles but with the economy in such a mess I'm not surprised; They (and Topps) have to selling less in a discretionary hobby like cards.
