I see the term used often but can anyone really explain it? Are they found only in Topps Triple Threads? What characterize a card to be "White Whale" Are they all autographed? Im confused...

It's a Moby Dick reference... Captain Ahab searched years and years to find Moby, a white whale.

Not sure if Im right on this one, but as mentioned above with the Moby Dick reference, these cards are extremely rare and hard to find. I believe most of them are 1/1's with the jersey and autograph.

    Examples :

Are they always autographed? Does anyone have one... does it actually say "White Whale" on it??? Im curious if there's also a way to determine it on the card itself....???

In my opinion, a white whale can be anything hard to find your looking to obtain. It can be a one of one or just a low #ed auto or patch. heck even a high end auto from ultimate collection could be your white whale. It's anything you want it to be.

It doesnt actually say white whale its just a term they adopted for one of one cards.

as far as triple threads goes, yes all the white whales are auto'd and have jersey pieces in them, they are all 1/1. as far as how they got the name who know's it prob is a moby dick reference. On the back of the cards it says white whale. hope that helps.

I'll try to elaborate, sorry if I was vague.

There are no "White Whale" cards in a hobby-wide sense. YOU determine what cards are YOUR "White Whale". It doesn't necessarily have to be autographed or contain a piece of material; it's just a card that you have to search a great deal of time for (hence the relation to Moby Dick). Often times it is a super-rare card with a very limited print run.

In the case of my collection, the "White Whales" that I search for are NCAA or Junior sets that I have looked years and years for... but I have yet to see one available.

    Hope that helps!

Ahhhh... maybe that's what the OP wanted to know. I am unfamiliar with football and was completely unaware of those cards. I was thinking from a personal collector's standpoint.
