I like the direction Burke is taking with this team. He's picked up a few draft picks at the deadline, now he's signed two second, possible late first rounders in Hanson and Bozak, he's in on Matt Gilroy... so it's exciting. As well, with these signings, it allows him to pssoible trade up in the draft this year. You think The Islanders, Tampa Bay or Avalance would take Kaberle+, Tor 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Round pick for Tavares?

Let's not trade away all our draft picks, and top defensemen for Tavares, please. Let's use our picks to restock our cupboard, like we desperately need to. Tavares isn't the answer to our problems...getting and developing young talent is what this organization desperately needs.
No more quick fixes. Let's let Burke build the Leafs like he did the Ducks, and we'll be fine. We need a lot more than one forward to fix this club...we need a bit of everything. What good would tossing away all our draft picks do us? None, that's what.

First off, Burke in NO way built the Ducks. Did he add some pieces that were pivotal in their cup run, yes, but he didn't build that team.
Second, if you're the Toronto Maple Leafs and you have a legitimate chance of getting John Tavares, and it costs you one or two roster players and a couple of draft picks... you take it. John Tavares is not only an amazing talent, he's a Toronto native that will bring excitement and skill to the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Third, Toronto is in a great position right now. They have a ton of cap room. They just signed Hanson and Bozak. So if you have to give up a couple of roster players, a 1st, and 2 second round picks to get Tavares... who cares? The two 2nd round picks will be guys who MAY someday play in the NHL, whereas Tavares WILL play in the NHL and be a star.

Couldn't agree anymore, especially with the part about Burke. While he did add some key players, he did not build that team

You're right about Burke and the Ducks now that I think about it. For some reason I keep thinking he was with the team longer than he was.
I also understand entirely where you're coming from with this Tavares thing, but I don't believe in putting all your eggs into one basket. This draft is quite deep, and I'd much rather see Burke trade up and get another first rounder to go with the one we have already. Draft two quality forwards like Schenn, and Kane (for example), if you're going to trade up at that rate. Suddenly you're building a team around two credible players, giving us a more dangerous team overall. Seems to be working well enough for the Flyers.
Maybe it's a quality over quantity thing, but I'd still rather see us draft two strong forwards than one. Especially when we're sitting on a system that is practically stagnant.
Just my opinion, and I'm sure it's in the minority. Burke will make the right moves, and do what's best for the team. I'm sure we can both agree on that.
