    Coyotes filing for Bankruptcy?

Statement by NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly regarding the Phoenix Coyotes
    Tuesday, 05.05.2009 / 8:53 PM / News
    By NHL .com
NEW YORK - National Hockey League Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly issued the following statement regarding the Phoenix Coyotes:

"We have just become aware of today's Bankruptcy Court filing purportedly made on behalf of the Phoenix Coyotes. We are investigating the circumstances surrounding the petition, including the propriety of its filing. We have removed Jerry Moyes from all positions of authority to act for or on behalf of the Club. The League will appear and proceed before the Bankruptcy Court in the best interests of all of the Club's constituencies, including its fans in Arizona and the League's 29 other Member Clubs."

This is Basilles way of forcing the league into letting him buy a franchise. The Coyotes are having major troubles, and Basille has the money. Using US laws theyre trying to force the league into letting the move to Ontario.

I understand it costs them an american market, but even as an american fan, I see this:

    - The southern ontario area can easily support team.
    - It would be a HUGE rivalry
    - It would be a cash cow, and a successful franchise for the league instantly
    - It puts another team in Canada

    The negatives:
    - Another franchise getting fan money in Canadian Dollars, paying salaries in US dollars
    - Likely having to pay out money to City of Phoenix
    - Egg on the comissioners face, because of the lost american franchise and they dont want Basille, because they hate the idea of an owner like him, who will stand out.

personally, (and i do say this lightly considering)..

it is sad to see something like this happen to a team, however i always thought it weird and unsustainable with teams in areas like phoenix, nashville, and even lower end down with 2 teams in florida state, and also 3 teams in short distance in california - san jose, anaheim and los angeles.

however in saying that, it is good that teams can make a good go of it which seem to be happening.

but with the shift from winnipeg to phoenix was always going to struggle.

USA isnt as hockey mad as the canadians (no offence intended, and just my perception), so another team in Canada seems like the logical move - especially if it is back to Winnipeg or an offshoot of them.

    just my $0.02

It was IMO just a matter of time something like this was going to happen.

It is true that as far as corporate sponsorship goes, Canada doesn't have the power in that area as many places in the States can afford. But how long is a sponsor going to help a team "hang on" especially in a desperate economic environment.

In Canada the economy may be lagging now a bit, but recovery is coming soon. That is evident already. Of course however I live in the only immune economic environment in the free world it seems, Saskatoon Saskatchewan! Anyone looking for work??? Move here!!!

Now to get back on topic. Bringing a team to Canada of course would be an exciting thought. No matter where it would end up, it would become a welcome addition to any community, or province(this is my little [yes little] hope it comes here). Even that said, Nashrules has all the points covered, but another negative to add would be if Phoenix moves to say hamilton for instance. What would stop all the other struggleing teams in the South states to find a home north of the border depending upon the succes of this initial move. Bye-bye American revenues, and less chance for more viewership.

I can't really see the league expanding anymore, we already have enough teams to choose from as it is, and it seems that every once in a while there is sabre-rattlings about adding teams in europe, Japan, and maybe Bangladesh(why not?).

Maybe I'm overlooking something here, but even if they lose all the American sponsorship and whatnot, isn't the dude looking to buy them the owner of Blackberry? I mean of all the people who could singlehandedly fun a team for a while, not even taking the Ontario market into consideration, it would be this guy. Things seem to be working out for Mark Cuban, albeit he is in Dallas, but I hardly see where the problem would lie if this dude bought the team. Just sell them and move them already.

Naw! If anything put em in Windsor. Then away games for them in Detroit would be the same as the Leafs playing in Buffalo. Home ice advantage negated.
