It's hard to take any Top anything lists seriously since everyone has a bias.

plus you have different eras where the game style was different. if you actually have the magazine and read the reason why they put each player in each spot, it makes more sense

Lebron is top 10 not 42

I'll start the argument. Mikan is a top 10 all-time player. He was a basketball pioneer. Because of his play, the lane was widened and the NBA instituted the shot clock. 7 championships in the BAA and NBA, 3 scoring titles, 13.4 rpg career, and a member of the first HOF class in 1959. He has a ton of other credentials. And he comes in at #29 on this list?
Incidentally, the reason i'm familiar with his career is because of my younger days spent reading the price guide. His 1948 Bowman RC is still the most expensive regular issue card in the guide. I wanted to know why his card was more valuable than Wilt and Russell's RCs so I got a basketball almanac and started reading about him (and a ton of other players along the way).
Lebron needs a ring before he can break the top 10. He'll get there eventually. He has the potential to be a top 5. I can't believe Barkley is in the top 20. I guess the argument for him is that he played during the Jordan era and it ruined a lot of NBA title hopes. The Bulls and Rockets had the 90s on lockdown.

as of now lebron is a 42. he's only played 6 years in the nba. you can't play 6 years, win only 1 mvp, play in 1 NBA Finals and get swept and make the top 10. he has all the stats, but as his career progresses he will progress the list. take notice though how all the active players that are ranked higher than him have played a career at least twice as long as his. dont take lebron @ 42 as an insult. when they redo this list in 10 years or whatever it is, lebron will be a top 10 if not top 5

correct me if im wrong, but because of mikan they had to introduce the goaltending call, correct? i believe you hit it on the head though, maybe not top 10, but at least top 15. w/o mikan we probably dont have players doing some of the things that they do. the only reason i can think that mikan got ranked where he did mainly becuz he was a 6'10 center when all the other centers were what? im not familiar with this era so im going to say 6'4-6'6?
for barkley i think they used the same argument they used with playing in the jordan era. that was tough for many players on the list. malone and stockton? well if not for jordan they both would have a title.
ive got some names for you guys to think about and debate. Maravich? Reggie Miller?

Yes but as of now people are comparing him to Jordan. Winning the MVP over the #12 player should say something...

ok well, kobe won the mvp over lebron last year. and correct me if im wrong, but wasnt this supposed to be th.e lebron/kobe finals? where was lebron? sitting @ home watching that obnoxious little brat desmond! yes you can make the argument that lebron's supporting cast didnt give him the support he needed. but that supporting cast was there for there 66 wins, how come they were only there for the first 8 games of the playoffs? you cant be a great player without a supporting cast. lebron can average these great numbers, but no player can win an nba finals without a strong performing cast. you think michael wins w/o pippen and rodman? you think that duncan wins w/o the admiral, parker, and ginobili? you think kobe that kobe wins without shaq, pau, horry, fisher? no. strong players make great players better.
besides, as of now, you cant come close to comparing lebron to jordan. lebron is still a very raw talent, i dont care what anyone says. if lebron can develop a consistent jumper like the likes of a jordan, his destiny will be top 3. as of now, his slashing ability is great, and hes so athletic hes tough to stop, if he can develop a consistent jumper, get his free-throws up to the mid 80's, he truly could be considered unstoppable. but as of now, lebron is a 42, maybe 40 at the highestLast edited by dukey4life47; 06-19-2009 at 10:28 AM.

Maravich was probably the greatest college player ever. His scoring record is far from being approached 40 years later. Those injuries and alcoholism really did in his pro career. I LOVE watching his highlight films, though. An absolute magician with the ball.
Never really liked the Reggie arguments. I never really considered the Pacers to be title contenders. He had a great shot, but that was about it.

Other names compared to Jordan in the past:
Kwame Brown
Harold Miner
Tracy McGrady
Vince Carter
Anfernee Hardaway
Grant Hill
I agree that Lebron is certainly noteworthy, but one MVP season doesn't get you a pass to top 10 ALL TIME. Hypothetically, Lebron tears an ACL and retires in August. Is he then considered top 10 or even 20? No. He needs those checks in the box (title, scoring title, MVP, All-NBA, etc) to be considered. The top 10 and even 20 are multiple recipients of some of these awards.
I'm not a Lebron hater by any means. I'm just trying to put his accomplishments into perspective.
