Especially since Crabtree has a rep of a diva and Smith one of a slacker.

I wonder if the NFL will ever have a rookie salary scale like the NBA

Same here, the only position that I think would be hurt by a cap would be RB since they produce early and have a shorter time frame to earn top dollar.

Only the players and the agents are greedy? Everyone is fighting over the same dollars. Every cent that doesn't go to the players ends up in the owners' profit margin. Personally, if I had to decide, I'd rather see the player (who gets hit and risks injury) get the money than Mike Brown.
Ironically, it's the player and the agent who are trying to respect the slot structure in the case of Andre Smith. They just want a deal priced in between what the No.5 and No. 7 draft picks got. Fairly reasonable. It's the Bengals that are trying to go off the reservation.

Exactly....Bengals had also been offering him less than the #6 guy got last year. Glad to see that he has signed up, IF (huge if) he gets in shape and puts in the work needed to play in the NFL, he will be a **** good player for many years.

yea but u also got to figure the Jets overpayed for Gholston, and Smith was worth about what there offering, but this is just another Bengals mistake that will keep happening when u take players with issues, and when the issues over reach the talent level............

How do I "got to figure" that the Jets overpaid for Gholston? If it's because he's a stiff, that has nothing to do with the value of a draft slot.
Again, Smith as the No. 6 pick simply wanted to be paid somewhere between the contract for the No. 5 and No. 7 pick. If we're talking about slotting salaries, this is fair no?
This is the kind of mess you get into when an owner doesn't want to hire a GM and lets his daughter handle contract negotiations.

On paper this logic makes sense, but you have to add in the fact that the #5 pick was QB and the #7 slot was the #1 WR taken in the draft. At #6, Andre Smith is an OL who severely damaged his value between the end of his Sr. year and now. I don't know the actual values involved, but it's not as simple as it might seem.
