There's a bit of Cloverfield mystery feal to it when I was watching the trailer. If I hear good stuff about it, I'll check it out.

97% on Rotten Tomatoes? Holy cow! And I just read this article:

'District 9' determined not to stick to formula

A couple of things I noticed:

"It's utterly original," producer Peter Jackson -- yes, "Lord of the Rings" helmsman Peter Jackson -- told Entertainment Weekly.

"In an industry that's looking to make movies out of every obscure TV show, or sequels, or video games, you look at 'District 9' and it's unlike anything you've ever seen," he said.

There are few people I actually trust in the movie biz, but (so far at least) Peter Jackson is one of them.

With its inventive plot and crowd-pleasing special effects, the low-profile, relatively low-budget ($30 million, a pittance these days) film was a hit at Comic-Con, creating a buzz before the film's release.

If there's one group of people that know sci-fi, it's the attendees of Comic-Con.

so has anybody seen this movie yet? i was pumped to see it, and with all the glowing reviews (90% on rotton tomatoes, 8.4 on IMDB top 250 #68) i was disappointed

i want to trash it, but there was some good....the special effects and some of the action sequences were pretty good, but most of this movie SUCKED to me....the story was completely stupid & made no sense at all, and the good qualities didn't hide the bad....

the lead character was annoying as hell...MNU was an organization that only hires the dumbest people in the world (if you have any type of common sense, you won't get hired there)...1.8 million aliens being housed in slums in south africa left to do what they want, left with weapons, nigerian rebels & the ability to breed, is about as unrealistic as it could get

how about a spacecraft the size of a city hovering above johannesburg for 20 years and yet humans didn't seem to care to investigate it...the idea that we would be interested in their weapons only and nothing else is retarded...scientists would have swarmed that spacecraft and spent decades researching and reverse engineering it

interspecies prostitution??? okay...that made sense...what was the point of even putting that in there?

i have plenty of complaints...these are just a few...i was expecting a serious movie that blew my mind...instead i got an average movie (at best) that doesn't deserve half the hype it got

anybody like this movie and want to discuss it with me?

I really enjoyed it but I read no reviews and only saw it because it was supposed to be "Halo" (P. Jackson told the director since Halo fell through he could do anything he wanted and Jackson backed him). I liked it a ton and can't wait to buy it on DVD

but what specifically did you guys like about it?

i'm not trying to persuade anybody to dislike it, but i'm just curious why almost everybody thinks this is one of the best movies of the year?

i can understand the alternate history and fantasy aspect of it, but the story was just silly...not even close to being realistic....i mean, i think if the story was different, it could have been an amazing film...but i felt that really held it back

many parts in the movie had the alien race in place to show socio-political issues, segregation, prejudice, while also showing some great action and sci-fi thrills. They could do whatever they could, live life the best they could as long as they stayed in their reservation space. It cleverly made everyone feel for the aliens, how they were being mistreated and pushed around, really had a great ending. It was a sci-fi thriller that was smart and thought-provoking. I was interested in it and when I saw it it exceeded my expectations
