    Insurance?

Just out of curiousity, does anybody have insurance on their hockey card collection? Obviously there can be some serious value in a collection, so it makes sense to have a little protection on it in case of fire, theft, etc.?

Alternately, anybody keep their super-high-end items in a safety deposit box?

I keep my biggest PC items in a fireproof lock box, including my "Made to Order", Between The Pipes collection, Cup singles, and my best autographs. Never considered getting my collection insured, not even sure how you would go about it as insurance companies can't know too much about the value of hockey cards.

Be careful with those fireproof safes, Kev. Some of them are designed to draw in a small amount of moisture. Over time it can mess up your cards. You have to throw in a couple of those silica packets that absorb moisture, like the ones that come with a new pair of shoes. I wrecked a complete set that way before I found out.

    Great tip, thanks Pat!

I looked into collection insurance a few years ago. The insurer demanded a 3rd party appaisal at my cost. There was no one local they offered to perform this. It ended up being a company in the US. They wanted me to image the front and back of each card and burn all photos to a disk as well as create an Excel spreadsheet of everything with Year, Manufacturer, Product, Player, Serial Number, Card Number, etc. for them. They would then appraise based on all that info. Their fee was like $700 and it seemed like I was doing all the work. I had a phone conversation with the guy and it was clear he knew nothing about sports cards so I declined to do it.

I have not looked into it since. At the time, my premium would have gone up about $35/year for each $25K worth of collectible insurance.

Actually, I'm downsizing my collection because of my insurance.

I suggest that you call up your home insurance policy providers because if you already have home insurance for "contents", they generally have a subcategory for Numismatic and/or Sports Cards. I think mine is either 1000 or 3000. I'll have to double check, but I'm slowly selling off until I hit that limit.

Anything really high end is in the safety deposit box through.

    Cheers,
    reoddai

Like Matt I have a small figure for cards think it 5000 and it a very minimal fee. I also have a fireproof safe as well. I plan on upgrading to a gun safe in the future so I can hold cases of cards LOL. You can get safes really cheap if you buy them second hand.
