I see your point, but how long is long enough? How long does Upper Deck have to keep track of outstanding redemptions, that could still be redeemed? 4 years isn't enough? Would 7 years be enough? 10 years? When would it stop??
If you're buying old wax, that is known to have redemptions in it..... the price per pack / box is going to be seriously discounted once those redemptions expire.
I think it's perfectly reasonable to expect Upper Deck to keep them to a minimum..... but to honour them indefinitely? There's got to be a limit.

And those are valid points too. However, I believe that 3 years is enough but if u get a redemption like in this instance they should give him a card with similar value to that one. Its not to have any card expire let alone the best card in the box (in most cases)

Do you really think a shop is "seriously discounting" prices on product with expired redemptions?

@steen101984
Giving expired redemptions an exchange of "similar value" would mean that Upper Deck is directly targeting the secondary market, which would be bad business to do openly. (even if it's obvious that they do it anyway)
Not to mention that expired redemptions are just that, expired. I was buying some 02-03 OPC boxes from one of my local stores looking for some Pat Roy reprint autos. If I pull a Zetterberg RC redemption, should they give me something for it, even though OPC wasn't one of their products then?
@bigdottawa
Any reputable store would be. If not, then they need to at least be warning their customers that they could be pulling hits that have no value. Upper Deck takes no losses on out of date stuff, they got paid for it up front. The Brick and mortars are the ones who take the loss when they have to mark it down, but anyone with half a brain isn't going to pay significant money for packs that are 50% junk cardboard in place of the hits.

Thats different the company isnt around anymore. If you make it it shouldnt expire. Thats all im saying. If you are lucky enough to open the exact box and get say a 1/1 that is a redemption you should get it or something comparable. What if it is a new customer doesnt know about redemptions and buys something older. Do you think he is going to buy again when a non-perishable good perishes??

If it didn't expire, they'd have to keep track of each and every single copy until the end of time. That's not an efficient way to do business.
If a new customer is buying something like that, then one of two things applies: Do you research before spending your money, or if a shop wants to keep that new customer, they should be informing them that they're buying something with expired redemptions.

Yes.
If you're talking about a product that has 1 redemption every 5 or 6 cases, probably not. If you're looking at getting 5 or 6 redemptions in every case.... then they had better be discounting them. If not, run away from that store.
I know both of the LCSs near me have discounted products with high redemption couts shortly before they expire.

But what cards are they going to give them?
In theory..... the only cards they should have around, ready to ship out.... are cards that are already marked to go out as redemptions..... or ones that were supposed to be, and never got redeemed.
The first group they can't send out, because someone may still redeem for one. The 2nd group will get used to cards that they put out as redemptions, but don't end up making (and THAT is the bad business practice we should all be concerned about).
What would scare me WAY more than them not honoring redemptions is that if every time someone had a high-end card that expried, they magically have extra, similar, cards kicking around that they can hand out.
I can see it now "Well, we got another complaint.... better send him a Tavares Young Gun... get those presses fired up".
I don't know. Maybe I'm coming across as being a bit of a jerk here.... I really hope not.... I just don't see how we can expect Upper Deck (or any card company) to honour a redemption past its due date. Eliminating the redemptions, and fulfilling them quicker (I've got one I've been waiting over 2 years for... and I'm not optimistic I'm going to see it anytime soon)... you want to complain about either of those topics: sign me up!
