One 'great' card vs. many 'good' cards?
I have to put myself on a budget, but now I'm debating and thought I'd ask what everyone else would do.
If you had a limited amount of money to spend on cards (let's say $75 a month) would you rather have one or two great/valuable cards, or would you rather have 10-12 more common/less valuable cards?
For example, a $60 auto vs. 5 GU cards.
Or a $60 rookie vs. 10 inserts/GU cards.

Well, I focus on Packers rookies. I'm trying to determine what I'd be happier with in a year....12 $50 rookies, or 30 $5 rookies.
For example, I can get a Javon Walker Bowman Chrome, a couple of Fleer or Fleer Platinum Javon Walkers and a Tony Fisher or two
or
I can get one Tony Fisher Contenders card.
Hmmmmm.

I think what sportscollector said is the way to go. Spend conservative 1 month and then splurge the next.

If your buying prospects, I'd say go for more of the less expensive kind, and maybe buy a great one once in awhile.

If I were spending $75 a month, I'd go for vintage stuff.
Modern day cards more likely than not go down in value
Look at all the Jay Williams collectors -- the day he shattered his legs, knees, and hips was the day his cards became worthless
Jay had a terrible rookie year, and given the injuries he suffered, and the fact that he's out for the year, it's not like he's coming back in 2004-2005 and becoming the next Kobe.
And look at the folks who bought over-priced Grant Hill cards.
You want great value in a card?
go vintage -- spend that $75 on a Nolan Ryan, for example.
Don't pay $100 for a Grant Hill that now is worthless b/c you can't sell it to another sucker
