im wondering what really affects the value of basketball cards? is it just the way the player plays or is it other factors?

it could be his play, his overall performance. some players can score a ton but their values still be kinda low because scoring a ton has no impact on the team. sometimes its also the brand of the card like this years SPGU is fun to open but because there is so much stock and inventory, a MJ/Pippen dual GU will have a 10 dollar selling value but a card similar from 05/06 willl have a 30 selling value. but usually its more to performance. Jennings was on a hot streak then he started to cool down so did his cards.

I think the main affect is demand/scarcity.

A player like Jordan for instance is popular, scored a ton, etc. but his base cards and low end inserts are almost worthless and not sought after.

Now if you have a 1/1 Logoman RC AUTO of Steve Blake that cards way more valuable than a Jordan base.
Ive seen lackluster RC AUTOs go for ridiculous prices just because they are low #'d or an ebay 1/1.

Economics 101 - Supply and Demand

As the previous person said card prices, like anything else, depend on supply and demand. Although there are a significant number of set collectors, like myself, most people are player collectors.

Card demand is determined by player popularity and the set or product the card is from - some sets are very popular, others are not, due to design or other factors.

Player popularity depends on their stats(esp. points scored) as offensive players are much more popular than primarily defensive players.

I think something else to come into effect is all us guys who grew up watching basketball in the 90s and are now in our early-mid 20s. We now have jobs and cash to buy the cards we always wanted of the players we loved from when we were kids. I know I'm that way about guy's like Patrick Ewing and Gary Payton to name a few..
