Well, for the most part, it depends on the grade you get. Most RCs that get graded 9.5 or 10 usually get a nice premium from player collectors. I personally have never gotten anything graded, but I have a Bogosian UD Ice RC /99 BGS 9.5 and it's one of my favorites! In my opinion, you should really only get RCs graded, those are the ones that increase the most in value when graded. Autos and jerseys really don't go up in value at all.

It is a very different story with vintage cards

I agree with others and think rookies year cards weather it be a base rookie or auto rookie should be the only ones graded. Now others may have cards graded or slabbed for protection.

Of course, I was just referring to modern cards. Obviously vintage is much different.

Seeing that you're in Canada, my best experience has been to drop it off to a local card shop that deals with Beckett. My LCS for example takes them, then hands it off to their distributor who hands it off to Beckett. My cost is $25CAD per card plus insurance based on the Beckett BV of the card. I can't remember the insurance table off-hand, but to give you an idea. I sent a Crosby YG and Ovechkin YG for $60CAD ($25x2+$10insurance). It will take about 4 weeks. This may sound expensive, but for me it takes away the hassle of having to calculate how much for Beckett to ship everything back and such...not to mention possibly dealing with customs if they decide to flag the package. I can rest easy that's it's $60CAD and it's a done deal. Another example was I sent an Ovy UD Black Base, Crosby UD Black Game Night AU, Tavares YG, & Gretzky OPC RC for $115CAD total for 4 cards that book a little over 1000.
I'd reckon that one disadvantage would be if you end up with a bad score. My Crosby UD Black Game Night AU for example got a BGS 8, which - in my opinion - for a modern card is pretty bad. Probably can't even do a 1-for-1 BV trade for it. But to me it's not a bad deal since the card is part of my PC. Good luck!
