P.K. Subban - Where to Put His Rookies?
I just posted this over at the UD Facebook page - hopefully it will generate some discussion and maybe UD will respond to the feedback.
As you guys may be aware, the Canadiens have called up PK Subban from Hamilton and he is scheduled to make his NHL debut tomorrow against the Philadelphia Flyers. As a Canadiens fan and collector, I'm of course very curious to know what Upper Deck intends to do with regards to producing rookie cards of Subban. Because it is very late in the 2009-10 card release schedule, realistically he could only appear in SP Authentic, Ultimate Collection, Be A Player, and The Cup - probably as non-auto'd RCs in the first two releases.
I can't speak for anybody else, but my preference and express wish is that UD holds off on producing PK Subban rookie cards until the 2010-11 season. This will allow UD to produce a Young Guns and other "staple" rookie cards from the Upper Deck franchise as opposed to a very limited number of releases, most of which would appear in high-end releases and not maximizing the full potential for a PK Subban rookie card.
Discuss.

Normally, I would 100% agree with you. I'd rather see PK have a YG, and all the other RC's. The X factor for UD though, is their license expiring this summer.
IMO, the most important RC for PK to have a is Cup auto patch RC. If the NHL/PA are not planning to renew UD's license, I'd rather he have rookies now, so he gets one in the cup. If UD ends up having a license next year, I'd prefer they wait.

I think that if UD loses anything in regards to licensing, it will only be their exclusive rights. They won't be shut out from the licensed card market. They'll only have to share.
Anyway...P.K. should wait until next year for a RC. I think that's the way it should be.

I voted for what UD will do, which is RCs next year. I expect subban to have some crazy collectors

It's an interesting topic. This was mentioned in other threads about Brayden Schenn and Nazim Kadri.... though because they were 'emergency' call ups, one poster mentioned that they're not actually eligible (not sure if that's the case or not).
I can only think of two players off the top of my head that this applies to (in recent years). Jonathan Quick (only RCs are BAP, SPA, Ultimate) and Kris Versteeg (BAP, Cup).
Those RCs sell for WAY more than other comparable players from the same sets.
I'm really not sure what I like better. If you're really into PK, you're going to go out and get at least one RC of him. It's going to stay REALLY valuable (unless he flops) if they release it this year. Is that a good thing? I certainly means that collectors, at large, will get shut out of the Subban RCs..... and I think that would be unfortunate.
Not really sure that one way is absolutely the right way to do it.

Well, I asked and UD answered:
"Subban will be a holdover for 10-11 since we’ve now passed our cutoff date for adding new rookies.
By the way, we love Subban, great guy to deal with and we're hoping he does great. Check this out: "

Feeling a small surge of pride...that's me!
I heard a UD employee say off the cuff at the filming that they might explore making him a UD spokesperson. He was really fun to work with, definitely one of my favorites. Him and Tangradi together are crazy, Habs media is gonna love him. I was bummed when he got sent down, glad to see him up with the club. His rc will come, but I'd definitely prefer auto/rc's, whatever that takes.

As long as he gets a certified auto, I don't care when it comes.
