Why are some ebay seller's so clueless?
I sell on ebay and would never pull crap like this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/THOMAS-LUCIC-25-...item3a59a6aab0
1/1 for a card numbered 25/25?! I understand some people pay premiums for the first, last or jersey number but between myself and the other serious Thomas collector's I doubt he would even get an offer of $50! I threw an offer of $33 plus shipping and he sent me a nasty email reiterating it's 1/1 status and that he will not accept anything less than $75
Some people
*edit* this guy has the item at $64.99 BIN right now but it started at $109.99 BIN or BO and then he went down to $99.99 and now changed it to it's current price.Last edited by Nathan7070; 04-10-2010 at 11:32 AM.

Yeah, it kind of bugs me when people put that cards are "1/1" when they are in fact just numbered, albeit special numbers like the first, last, or jersey number. Then again, you can't blame them for trying to get people to look at their auction so they have the best chance of selling it.
I would never do it, but I can see why some people do.

Oh, I certainly agree but he still needs to realize him price is insanely high. I think a Crosby/Ovechkin decent patch one just went for $149 and he think Lucic and Thomas should be $75 because it is the last in the print run with nice patches?
We exchanged some barbs by messages on ebay and it is safe to say this guy doesn't know what he is doing.Last edited by Nathan7070; 04-09-2010 at 03:48 PM.

Yeah, the ol' "ebay 1/1s" make me laugh. Like the above post said..... it's all about getting more traffic to your auction.
Just like saying you're selling a card of "Tim Thomas" isn't enough - you're selling a card of "Vezina Trophy winner Tim Thomas, of the Boston Bruins". Get more searchable words in there......
As for the price on this one, I can't say. If no one will pay his price, he'll either lower it.... or take it down. What do you expect though, when this was likely the "box hit" from a product that cost him over $200 to bust? Needs to make his money back somewhere.... so asking $75 for the best card in the box is the way he'll try and do it.

I think that auction is ridiculous.
Give it some time and the seller will realise that nobody will bite on that card for that price. Eventually the price will drop. I see it all the time.Last edited by mrbungle; 04-09-2010 at 04:00 PM.

Yeah, I would have to agree with you that the price is probably a bit too steep. I wouldn't be surprised if he could sell it for $45-50 or even more. Saying that you won't take anything less than $75 though is a bit much to me.
Most people on eBay add things like that in their title just to get a bit more looks at their auctions. Even if it isn't a true 1/1, that doesn't mean somebody that looks because they saw the "1/1" won't still buy it.
I'd have to agree with you though, he's probably just trying to make back some of his money that he lost when he bought that box of the costly SPGU (assuming he bought a box).
While it may be true that he realizes it is priced way too high, there are also people that put such a high prices because they don't want anybody buying it outright, but want people to make offers. However, you can tell this guy is just pricing it too high since he rejected Nathan's offer and was rude to him about not offering enough.

You could easily fill an entire site with stories of the idiocy of some sellers (and sometimes buyers)...
The real problem with the ebay 1/1 is that it works! (just like hot packs, etc. etc.) Somebody, somewhere buys the seller's bs and pays for it. I think it's sometimes difficult as rational folks, though, to remember - the card is worth what somebody (not necessarily a well informed collector) will pay. If even 1 person is willing to pay that premium for that particular card, it's unfortunately 'worth' it to a seller.
I'm not arguing for this guy and I think he's whacked, but it's his card and he can sit on it for as long as it takes. I made an offer on a card one time, got no counteroffer, and it sold for less than I was willing to pay. Three days later, the card was relisted by the guy who bought it (I actually bought several other items from the original seller). I offered him $5-10 over what he paid (he was asking 3x). He declined and our emails went nasty after a couple back and forths... He cut his asking price in half - still wouldn't entertain my offer - listed ended as unsold (or sold off ebay). His card, his right...

Don't take this personal mate, but it was no different when you and I were discussing about that Duchene H&P auto. It books 10, but you wanted $45-50 for it. Are you willing to sell it for $10? I highly doubt that. You would have laughed and told me to bugger off. Same goes for this guy selling the Thomas patch, and any other seller out there selling beyond the card's book value. He/she can do whatever he/she wants. It's their card, not yours. People can write whatever they want on ebay ads to garner attention for whatever they're selling. Why embarass them? No one laughs when Toyota suckers people for buying the Prius are they? (I should know, I own one
) In my opinion, I'm betting that card doesn't book higher than 50 when Beckett comes out with their pricing. Have at it then.

Something is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. That, and there is always the phrase, there is a sucker born every minute.
