    Memorial Cup Preview

With Moncton winning the QMJHL title tonight, the four team field for the 2010 Memorial Cup is set!

Below are brief team-by-team capsules as well as the schedule. Let's use this thread to hear peoples' thoughts on the field, predictions on how the tournament will play out and who will ultimately win the title of Memorial Cup champions by May 24!

    -----------------

    BRANDON WHEAT KINGS, Host

Blessed with every bit as much talent as any team in the tournament, the Wheat Kings have the potential to ride home ice advantage to a successful tournament. Discipline will be key considering the potent powerplays they will be going up against, and they'll have to answer questions about goaltending. Jacob De Serres has stolen a couple of games in the playoffs. If he gets hot, Brandon could be tough to beat.

Having not played in three weeks by the time they play in Friday's tournament opener, getting their legs under them as soon as possible against arguably the favourite to win this tournament (Windsor) will be key.

Regular season record: 50-18-1-3, 104 PTS

    Top regular season scorers: Matt Calvert (47G, 52A, 99PTS), Brayden Schenn (34G, 65A, 99PTS), Scott Glennie (32G, 57A, 89PTS)

Top regular season scoring defenceman: Colby Robak (16G, 50A, 66PTS)

Top regular season goalie: Time was split between Jacob De Serres (25-8-1-1, 0.899 sav pct, 2.91 goals against avg) and Andrew Hayes (25-12-0-2, 0.906 save pct, 2.68 goals against avg)

    Top playoff scorers: Brayden Schenn (8G, 1A, 19PTS), Matt Calvert (9G, 7A, 16PTS), Aaron Lewadniuk (6G, 8A, 14PTS)

Top scoring playoff defenceman: Colby Robak (3G, 9A, 12 PTS)

Top goaltender, playoffs: Jacob De Serres (8-3-1, 0.897 save pct, 3.17 goals against avg)

Road to the Memorial Cup: Swift Current (4-0), Saskatoon (4-2), Calgary (1-4)

    -----------------

    CALGARY HITMEN, WHL Champions

After being forced to seven games by the eighth seeded Warriors, the Hitmen were a revelation.. going 12-4 over the next three rounds to convincingly win the WHL championship.

Showed the ability to get timely goals, timely saves and play smothering defence when necessary.

Their offense is built around Brandon Kozun, who led the WHL in both regular season and playoff scoring. Michael Stone has emerged as one of the top 19 year old defenceman in the country for his play in both ends of the rink.

Wheat King fans will no doubt have the May 19 game against the Hitmen circled on their calendars. That will be the night the Wheaties get a chance to avenge their 4-1 series loss in the Eastern Conference finals.

Regular season record: 52-17-1-2, 107 PTS

    Top regular season scorers: Brandon Kozun (32G, 75A, 107PTS), Tyler Shattock (30G, 48A, 78PTS), Joel Broda (39G, 34A, 73PTS)

Top regular season scoring defenceman: Michael Stone (21G, 44A, 65PTS)

Top regular season goalie: Martin Jones (36-11-0-1, 0.919 save pct, 2.21 goals against avg)

    Top playoff scorers: Brandon Kozun: (8G, 22A, 30PTS), Michael Stone (5G, 15A, 20 PTS), Misha Fisenko (8G, 11A, 19PTS)

Top scoring playoff defenceman: Michael Stone (5G, 15A, 20 PTS)

Top goaltender, playoffs: Martin Jones (16-6-1, 0.915 save pct, 2.36 goals against avg)

Road to the Memorial Cup: Moose Jaw (4-3), Medicine Hat (4-2), Brandon (4-1), Tri-City (4-1)

    -----------------

    MONCTON WILDCATS, QMJHL Champions

Convincingly emerged from the shadow of the #1 ranked St. John with a 4-2 series victory in the QMJHL finals.

The most familiar name on the Wildcats is probably Canadian World Jr forward Gabriel Bourque. Acquired at the trade deadline, Bourque curiously only scored three goals in 25 regular season games after joining Moncton. Any doubts were erased by his potting 19 goals over Moncton's Q championship run.

Another player thought to be a future quality NHLer is defenceman Brandon Gormley. Gormley narrowly missed making this year's World Jr team and is likely to be a much more familiar name by this time next year.

Moncton appears to have a very balanced attack, with none of their three regular season leading scorers making the grade as their top three playoff scorers.

Regular season record: 48-14-2-4, 102 PTS

    Top regular season scorers: Nicolas Deschamps (39G, 57A, 96PTS), David Savard (13G, 64A, 77PTS), Randy Cameron (24G, 44A, 68PTS)

Top regular season scoring defenceman: David Savard (13G, 64A, 77PTS)

Top regular season goalie: Had a total of four goalies play 10 games or more for them during the season. Nicola Riopel (19-5-0, 0.918 save pct, 2.06 goals against avg) played more than any of them.

    Top playoff scorers: Kelsey Tessier (12G, 15A, 27PTS), Gabriel Bourque (19G, 7A, 26PTS), Mark Barberio (5G, 17A, 22PTS)

Top scoring playoff defenceman: Barbeiro (5G, 17A, 22PTS)

Top goaltender, playoffs: Nicola Riopel (15-4-0, 0.933 save pct, 2.05 goals against avg)

Road to the Memorial Cup: Cape Breton (4-1), Rouyn Noranda (4-1), Drummondville (4-1), St. John (4-2)

    -----------------

    WINDSOR SPITFIRES, OHL Champions

The defending Memorial Cup Champions are back, looking for the rare repeat. After falling behind 3-0 in the OHL semi-finals against Kitchener, the "Spits" came alive.. coming back to win the series and then sweep the top seeded Barrie Colts.

Windsor of course features the possible #1 overall pick in this year's draft in Taylor Hall as well as one of the better offensive defenceman in the CHL over the last number of years in Ryan Ellis. It doesn't stop there, as they boast Canadian World Jr Team forwards Greg Nemisz and Adam Henrique as well as top prospect defenceman Cam Fowler.

Their achilles heal appears to be their goaltending, which will be under the microscope against the potent offenses that they'll face at the Memorial Cup.

Regular season record: 50-12-1-5, 106 PTS

    Top regular season scorers: Taylor Hall (40G, 66A, 106PTS), Justin Shugg (39G, 40A, 79PTS), Adam Henrique (38G, 39A, 77PTS)

Top regular season scoring defenceman: Ryan Ellis (12G, 49A, 61PTS)

Top regular season goalie: Philipp Grubauer (23-15-2-5, 0.911 save pct, 2.86 goals against avg). Was acquired in a trade, going 13-1-1-1 with Windsor since that trade.

    Top playoff scorers: Taylor Hall (17G, 18A, 35PTS), Ryan Ellis (3G, 30A, 33PTS), Adam Henrique (20G, 5A, 25PTS)

Top scoring playoff defenceman: Ellis (3G, 30A, 33PTS)

Top goaltender, playoffs: Philipp Grubauer (16-1-1, 0.909 save pct, 2.69 goals against avg)

Road to the Memorial Cup: Erie (4-0), Plymouth (4-0), Kitchener (4-3), Barrie (4-0)

As long as moncton doesn't win, I'm happy. Brandon has Schenner. Calgary I have adopted as my favorite WHL team. Windsor is my favorite OHL team and I love Taylor Hall. And Moncton has no one.

Gotta say I think Windsor repeats. During the playoffs they went 16-3 and have just too much talent to overcome. But then agan, maybe one of the other 3 teams comes in with a hockey goalie and slows Windsor down

Windsor is stacked. Just absolutely STACKED with talent. I think if a team is going to beat them, Calgary has the best chance. Martin Jones is one of, if not the, best goalie in the CHL and he can steal games for them while guys like Kozun can put up numbers on the offensive end of things. I'm writing Moncton off completely. I predict a Calgary vs Windsor showdown for the cup with Windsor pulling it out.

The way I see it going is this,

Windsor gets a buy to the final, and Calgary will play Brandon in the semi after Brandon beats Moncton in the tie-breaker

I personally see Glennie 2-3 years away yet before cracking the NHL but i'm no expert lol. Also with their loss tonight Moncton is now out of the tournament
