Cool How good is pitcher John Ely

Lately, the Dodgers and Dodger fans are enjoying the pitching performances of the hottest young pitcher this side of Stephen Strasburg. His name is John Ely, currently the proud owner of an MLB-best string of 84 consecutive batters faced without allowing a walk. He’s won both of his last two starts (including the Dodgers eighth straight win) and now we have a bit of Elymania taking hold of many Dodger fans. Thanks to Blue Heaven (a great Dodger fan blog), Mike Scioscia’s Tragic Illness (a cool Dodger fanblog–the title references a classic episode of “The Simpsons”), Memories of Kevin Malone (an awesome Dodgers fan blog) and Twitter, here’s a sampling of the (tongue-in-cheek) buzz about John Ely:

    * John Ely is so good, he struck out Chuck Norris. Twice. (@kjasalter)
    * John Ely struck out Chuck Norris… with 2 pitches. (@Russaldo13)
    * John Ely was the first to be with CoCo.(@MrLASportsFan)
    * Coco is with John Ely. (@militantangleno)
    * John Ely can’t walk and chew gum at the same time, because he doesn’t walk anybody. (@ToddKaplan)
    * John Ely made Casey Blake’s beard grow back. (@barkinj)
    * The only reason Andre Ethier’s pinkie hasn’t healed yet is because John Ely hasn’t touched it. (@truebluela)
    * John Ely knows how Lost ends. (@dpwtv)
    * Al Gore invented the internet. John Ely invented Al Gore. (@nineteen84)
    * Cy Young never won a John Ely award #ElyMania (@truebluela)
    * John Ely can sing God Bless America in three seconds. #ElyMania (@chadmoriyama)
    * John Ely doesn’t wear a watch, he decides what time it is.
    * When the A-Team is in trouble, they call John Ely.
    * John Ely’s family has to pay for tickets because he doesn’t give free passes.
    * George Steinbrenner could have traded for John Ely, but he couldn’t stand the thought of a Yankee having more control than himself.
    * When John Ely was a baby, and his parents tried to teach him how to walk, he simply said, “no thanks”.

Dodgers fans must be reaching to find something to get excited about. I mean sure he might be good but his 3.41 ERA puts him in the middle pack as far as Dodgers starters alone. He's won his last 3 starts but I see that more as from the Dodgers scoring 13, 6, and 6 runs during those starts. He looks like he's going to be pretty good but not even close to the same breath as Strasburg

Are you serious? Strasburg hasn't done anything yet... everyone is going crazy about what he does in the Minors. Plus he's expected to do that since he was the #1 pick. I don't think Ely was expected to be pitching the way he has.

Why would you talk down what Ely's done in the MAJOR LEAGUE?

And yeah we're reaching to find something, it's not like we were just on a 9 game winning streak or anything from 13-17 to 25-19 in 2 weeks

His ERA could be a million, as long as he keeps winning.

I was happy to see the Tigers at least draw a walk from the guy last night. Also glad that Austin Jackson didn't get his face blown apart by Tronosco.

yes, the TEAM has done well, and Ely has won by pitching well and backed by the offense scoring runs for him. He is the 3rd best starting pitcher on the team currently. Let me say it differently from the original post. Ely is not the hottest young pitcher this side of Strasburg. In the MAJORS he is not the young pitcher people are talking about compared to several other guys like Mike Leake, Hasanori Takahashi and even more Jamie Garcia.

Again, not saying he isn't a good pitcher but he's far from being one of the best youngest talents in the league

No one said he was the best... he was the hottest because of his streak.

This is the reason there is a craze about him:
His name is John Ely, currently the proud owner of an MLB-best string of 84 consecutive batters faced without allowing a walk.

If he didn't have this streak then we wouldn't be talking about him.

    Cool

I like this blurb about John Ely that I found on mlb.com:
Ely has been "found money" for the Dodgers in manager Joe Torre's eyes, and it's hard to argue. The rookie right-hander was called up at the end of April because the Dodgers were desperate for pitching, and all Ely's done is throw strikes. He went 89 batters without issuing a walk until the first inning of his last start, against the Tigers. That was his only walk in his last four starts. He went six innings, allowed two runs on eight hits and notched his third straight win. All five of Ely's starts have been six innings or longer. His velocity sits in the high-80s, but he's striking out batters too: 28 in 31 2/3 innings.

Yes, us Dodger fans are very happy about John Ely. We've had two non-productive spots in the starting rotation since the season started and John Ely has stepped up. Some of us even believe he may have "inspired" Kershaw and Billingsley to pick up their game, resulting in longer, better outings.
