Card Thickness
Hello everyone. Im fairly new to the hobby (well, reborn is more like it). back when i was busting packs with my dad (RIP pops) their was only one thickness of card.. well i guess some were more flimsy then others.. but for the most part.. they were the same.. you didnt need 10 different types of toploaders to store your cards.. so the question ive come to now is.. how do they measure these thickness? Ive notice a common unit 'Pt' that they use.. like 100pt, 120pt. 135pt etc.. not having a LCS im forced to order holders online and im wondering how to measure these cards before i order the top loaders.. I think it would be nice to have a site with a list of 'thicker' cards and what top loaders they require.. (would be a project for a rainy day).. Anyways.. i know most of you have the luxury of going to your LCS with cards in hand to get loaders. but some of us unfortunates are S.O.L. haha. Cheers everyone. happy collecting!
ps.. i have a digital caliper if that helps..

alot of people like myself have had to find out with trial and error...i personally buy a few of each holder so that whenever my cards come in i can find which holder the card needs.....but a general rule.....regular cards are 35pt....slighly thicker cards like OPC premier are 55pt......regular jersey cards are 75pt....slightly thicker jersey cards are 100pt.....patch cards usually are 130pt as well as most the cup cards.....sweet spot/shot helmet and stick cards are 180pt......draft boards...the cup dual logos....the cup dual notable number patches....UD black rivals 6 on 6 booklet are 220pt ( these require custom one touches which only one person i know of makes by hand) you can also use snap tight cases...hope that helps you out

I invested in buying one of each point and buy a pack when I need them. Of course I havemore regular and 75 PT but for the most part I have the toploader made for every width.
Since you buy online, I suggest you do similar as shipping is costly to buy one by one. So maybe look at it long term and buy a certain quantity. Make sure you buy teambag as tick card will let dirt come in the top loader. So wrapping them in a team bag prevent dust from coming in.
Tick wise, you never really know what to expect. I puled a jeersey that usually are very thin (75 pt) and got one with a seem very tick and end up 130 pt when all other fit 75. So they will make a memorabilia thicker if the tissue oblige them.
Make sure you find all you need and order them in one shippement to save. Also buy from a store in your country.

If I'm not mistaken, 1 pt is 0.001 inches. For us Canadians, 1 inch = 2.54 cm
20 pt = 0.020 inches = 0.0508 cm = 0.508 mm
100 pt = 0.100 inches = 0.254 cm = 2.54 mm
I wish I had some digital callipers to double check. Maybe you can post some results for common base cards and game used cards to see if they match the standards?
Cheers,
reoddai

I stock regular, 55, 75 100, 130, 180 point. That's just the top loads. I don't know a "Rule of thumb" I just keep a pack of each and use the one that's right for the card. Once you get bigger then that I use snap box's for them.

thanks for all the info people!. i think i will just grab a few of each next time i order..
Are you guys familiar with any type of holders similar to the ones PSA and BGS uses that have a little header space to insert a piece of paper with info? id like to get a bunch of those , preferrably snap together.. i dont care to have anything permanent. I would like them for my player collection , i have a about 100 base and parallel cards in my player collection.. most are really only BV at about 2-10 dollars, so they dont really seem worth sending to get graded. so i wanted to just make my own little label for just the year and brand and card number and parallel edition , i looked on BCS and they had some super this acrylic ones. but thats too much for me . i think they were 7 bucks each, im looking for something in the few dollar range. similar to the magnetic snap cases. if anyone can point me in the right direction that would be great. Cheers guys.

Thanks for this. I'm new to this, too, and just had an OPC Premier card come through today where it doesn't fit in the toploaders I just bought.
Trial and error. Not to worry, it's not like the toploaders cannot be used anyway.

I have just received my first Glacial Graphs card (Dion Phaneuf RC) and was wondering if anyone has a size of which toploader to use? Because these are a quite thin (thinner than a regular base card?) and feels rather loose in the toploaders I have at the moment. Any help would be appreciated.
May have to stock up on different sizes soon...

Do you put the card in a penny sleeve?
If not do this for all cards in top loader, it will prevent scratch and help the card stay in the top loader. I also buy a more expensive prenny sleeve that does better for certain card tickness.
