Yorvit Torrealba Suspended Three Games
http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?...=.jsp&c_id=mlb
Plain wrong if you ask me. I know you aren't supposed to make contact with the umpire but when the brim of your hat/helmet makes contact with the brim of the umpire's hat that's totally accidental contact. Wrong of him to be suspended 3 games for an accidental contact - especially one so minor. Michael Bourn was only suspended 1 game when he got up and accidentally bumped the first base umpire after a close call. I think MLB needs to be more consistent with it's punishments - and not so nitpicky...stop suspending players for accidentally bumping an umpire.

its still contact, written in stone a guaranteed suspension. Just like when a player gets hit by a pitch, he doesn't even have to be hit, just has to have the ball graze his jersey and he's awarded the same base. Whether you do it accidentally or not its still the same, he still was making sure to get in the umpires face and shouting at him in anger

I see your point - and I do agree that the suspensions are probably in place to try and keep players/managers from arguing. It just kinda rubs be teh wrong way to suspend someone for what is clearly an accident.

It was an accident and I have no problem with him being suspended for him. Umpires deserve respect and contact is contact. However, like you said, they need to be more consistent with punishments. Just like the first offense with PED use, contact with an umpire should have a set amount of games for the suspension. Obviously, in extreme cases it would be different but still... You get the idea.

If a player gets in the umps face he has to be aware he may make contact. I say dont put yourself in that position in the first place and you dont have to worry about an "accident". Its like playing with fire, you may get burned.

I think you have a right to argue with an umpire if you want...especially if they make a bad call. What I don't like seeing is a guy get suspended 3 games because the brim of his hat touched the brim of the umpires. Total accident. If you guys are fine with him being suspended for accidental contact like that and getting suspended then you should be all for suspending players that make contact with one while fielding a ball or sliding into a base - same concept - accidental contact ;-)

Im saying an arguement with an umpire is fine at a respectable distance. If you are close enough to make contact brim to brim its no accident, your just to close and are asking for it. He didnt just walk up and get in the umps face by accident.
