Baseball regulation question.
I have always wondered, on strike three why does the batter run to first and the catcher either tags him out or throws to first? I guess I alway's thought the third strike was an out, can someone explain this to me.
Thanks,
Tom

If it hits the ground it's a live ball.

Even if it does not hit the bat?

Yep. Say if it's a wild pitch and you swing and miss, you have the chance to beat is out to the base.

Hmm. Thanks.. I never knew that, can't say I totally understand the reason. But it makes more sense.

Unless first base is occupied. But if there are two outs then that doesn't matter either.

I never understood how it could count as a strike out for the pitcher, but not a regular out. So a pitcher could possibly have like 5 strike outs in one inning.

Yes I have seen it a couple times. 4 K's in an inning.
