BY: John Grigg
We all know about bonus clauses in contracts. Score 50 goals, get a mitt full of money! Win the Conn Smythe Trophy, get a mitt full of money! (Even if we have to squeeze it under the cap next season.)

What's the problem?

The fact that all of the other players who are on that list have great and potential star players. Bozak is tied for the biggest bonus and look at the players who he is listed with. Now I do know that he is a solid player but I would rather have those players he is tied with any day.

Just letting you know, you're beloved Bleu, Blanc, et Rouge were also heavily interested in Bozak. As for the bonus, well it's just that, bonus. If Bozak doesn't perform, he doesn't earn his bonus = no cap hit. The bar is set pretty high for him to earn that bonus (25 goals minimum, 35 assists minimum, 60 points minimum are just some of them I think). So, I still don't see what the problem is to be honest with you.

I know that the bonus is not payed out if he does not reach his figures. I would have loved for him to sign with the Habs last year but they would not have been able to afford his contract. Luckily for the Leafs they were going in to last season without much pressure to make the playoffs so they were able to afford him.
Look at a team like the Rangers they signed Mill Gilroy to a bigger contract(I know it was not a bonus) but he did not play up to their standards and was a pretty hard pill to swallow.

Well, you can't compare Gilroy's contract to Bozak's contract. The Rangers are better off without Glen Sather. The Bozak contract is a win-win for both sides because unless Bozak performs, the Leafs are safe with the cap. Last year, he was on pace to reach his bonuses but did not play enough games (0.73PPG = best in all rookies by the way). Just because the kid never went 1st overall doesn't mean you got to knock him down. You have to give Burke some credit in persuading him and Gustavsson to play for the Leafs...and he didn't waste any draft picks to get both of them.

You are very right that the Leafs were in a good situation to get Bozak. Burke has also done a great job on guys like Hanson and Rynas as well.

At least in the NHL , teams are giving BONUS if the player do something....
In the NFL , Sam Bradford ( recently drafted and never played a NFL Game yet ) just signed a 5 years / 86 M contract

They definitely do things differently in the NFL - I've never really looked into the contract structuring in that League to a great extent but it is much different than hockey. I think that the one item guaranteed to cause another work stoppage would be the NHL wanting to get rid of guaranteed contracts.
Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...
