What If............?
What if... there was no more high end (ie..Cup,Black,OPCP) produced?
What if... card company's only inserted 1 game used or auto per case?
What if...collecting went back to the way it was 10+ years ago?
What if...all boxes cost less then $75 us?
What if...there were no short printed rookies?
Just wondering how many less collectors there would be if these things were true.
Thoughts?

Collectors will spend more on mid-end products :)

The BV/SV will skyrocket back to similar levels to the 1997-98 era.
What if...collecting went back to the way it was 10+ years ago?
It'll be a lot of fun, we didn't put a lot of emphasis on BV/SV, card condition then.
What if...all boxes cost less then $75 us?
More people would collect hockey cards because it has become affordable.
What if...there were no short printed rookies?
Hmmm... bv of super stars rookie will be similar to those of end of 80s, beginning of 90s? (Sakic, Leetch, Hasek, Modano, Roenick, Brodeur, etc.)

If this happened, and we didn't repeat the early 90's, then it would be alright with me I guess.
I think we all would have to lower our expectations on what we get, but it would still be fun to see what we get.

If all that happened:
1. All the fake flavor of the day collectors would go by-bye
2. The "collectors" only in the hobby for money would go bye-bye
3. Collecting would be more fun, without the emphasis on BV, and high-end autos/gu

Interesting question! I think if a lot of that changed back to the old ways of collecting a few things would happen:
- inserts would once again become popular
- base cards would be more appreciated as an increased number of collectors would go back to looking at each base card and reading the stats and bios on the back every once in a while
- an increased number of people would go back to collecting sets
However, if such a change ever happened, I would expect almost the whole hobby of card collecting would have to start fresh since many people who collected everything that is offered now, would be gone.

I think that there were good and bad aspects of collecting in the 90's and collecting now. I love that patch and Jersies are pretty common, thats what drew me back into collecting. To hold that card in your hand and think that the player wore this or signed this card really has special meaning to me. I do however agree with the whole BV thing however..LOL

ya it's crazy to think about back then(i wasn't born then) but like just what some of those cards sell for now(gretzky,Lemuiex Rookies) is remarkable... And some of those rookie cards look nicer than what the look like now(except ice premiere rookies)

Love this!
I have to admit, I remember when the hobby was much more fun.
Now everyone is so hell bent on owning Crosby this, AO that.
And the flavor of the day collectors? Holy smokes I cannot tell you in just the past 5 or so years how many of these I have seen!
It's usually the new types just breaking into hockey who can't stick to one darn collecting focus. Or the hockey collectors who every year try and collect the next big rookie and when they don't pan out, they dump everything and try with next year's crop. Makes me chuckle.
I honestly wonder some days if I'll ever see another person like myself who collects a player from the inception of their NHL career, is not high end player, a "dreaded" defenseman at that (Rob Blake), and sticks with the guy, start to finish for 2 decades should the player have that long a career.
Or even someone who starts collecting a player that is not initially perceived as a superstar but develops into one and sticks with them for the duration.
I am guessing no.
That said, each to their own, but this hobby has slowly gone into the proverbial crapper in the past 3 years or so because of a lot of the things mentioned.
Sad to see.

i for one..would love to see those days come back!!!! i remember walking into a card shop in RI and i just started collecting cards..so i asked the owner who would be a good football player to start collecting?? he said how about curtis martin?? i said sure.i didn't even care how much he was worth..although the owner did say..this card is $1.50 it just went up...i was like wow!!! now i wouldn't even give those cards a second look..i guess we can thank good old supply and demand...we wanted more they gave it to us..now hardly nothing is scarce anymore..auto's, jersey's,, cut's,, you name it,,remember when the flair showcase baseball in 1997 hit the market?? and there were talk of 1/1's being inserted?? and people were like wow!! one card of each player?? a masterpiece?? and then some young teenager pulled the ken griffey jr, 1/1 and was offered $10,000 for it??? now you could get that card for $5.00..i know this is a hockey section i just thought it was kind of funny..but i honestly think that card started a out of control no holds barred limit to how card company's could increase there revenue!!!
