    Chris Chelios Retires

DETROIT - Chris Chelios is finally calling it quits.
The 48-year-old defenceman has announced his retirement after 26 seasons in the NHL.

His 1,651 career games with Detroit, Montreal, Chicago and Atlanta are the most by any defenceman in NHL history.

The three-time Norris Trophy winner will continue to be involved with the game, accepting a job with the Red Wings as an adviser to hockey operations.

This is anything but surprising, but it's still sad to see players from my younger years retiring. There are hardly any active players that played an NHL game in the 80's, let alone Chelios who played his first NHL game in 1983-84.

playing till 48 is quite an acheivement. maybe kolvalchuk's agent should have used chelios as a case to prove you can play past 43.

just as crazy as messier playing in an old-timers game as an oiler in the first outdoor game in edmonton when he was still playing for the canucks! anyone remember that?

I remember him being in the game, but he was a member of the New York Rangers at the time.... not the Canucks.

The Rangers made sure their schedule was set up to all both him & Slats to make the trip out to Edmonton for the game.

    No kidding.

1990-91 was the first year I collected Hockey Cards. I'd love to see Upper Deck & Score products do buy-back autos for any active players that were part of the sets from that year.

    Not many left though:

    Mark Rechhi (both)
    Owen Nolan (both)
    Kris Draper (both)
    Mike Modano (both)
    Martin Brodeur (Score only)

    is that it?

Chelios, Brind'Amour, Niedermayer, Blake, Darryl Sydor, and Brad May have all retired (I think) and they'd be the last few players still kicking from the 1990-91 Sets.

(Include guys like Federov or Jagr too - if you want. Still active, but over seas).

Kudos to you - just about everybody in British Columbia tries to forget that ever happened.

Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...

That's a pretty good list. The only other player I found is Mathieu Schneider who played his first game in 1987-88, but wasn't actually a rookie for 2-3 years later. However, now he is a UFA and there is the chance he could retire as well.

You do get props for picking out the one I missed :)

He had a RC in 90-91 for sure.

So does Chelios playing 7 games in 2010 mean he played in 4 different decades....or does it only count if he played 2010-11 season?

He has had a nice long memorable career....Wish him the best of luck outside of hockey

But one can not forget this one....

Keep watching as Samuelsson jumps on the back of a Canadien......
