Rich,
I am not sure if you know but another had a opportunity to do the same thing Jeremy did but did not take UD on their offer for the pack out of THE CUP. I wish they would have.
If they the manufacturer's wanted to do lower end products I bet some collectors would be happy to cover it. Again this would be no cost to the company which is the bottom line of every move they make (dollar and cents).
Even if they did the grid much like you say many collectors would not check the resource so would it be worth while in the eye of the company. As it all going to boil down to the companies putting up dollars to do this. In the end everything boils down to putting out a product at the lowest cost.
It kind of like this. Just because you have rules for all to see how many actually read them. Being a mod on a board I am sure you seen that first hand.

This is actually a fantastic idea Richard. Obviously the time and money spent to actually do it makes the entire thing rather prohibitive. Especially considering the number of products that feature authentic patches.
I'm more of the mind that "less is more" when it comes to this hobby. Of course the landscape has changed so much that people expect the big hits in every box, and considering the price...I'd say it's a fair thing to expect. If manufacturers cut down on the numbers of patches in the products it would make this idea a lot more feasible.
Obviously that's not going to happen though. The amount produced isn't go to drop anytime soon...so the cost of this idea isn't going to be reasonable enough for any company to do. Maybe ITG; just because their runs on product are more limited than Upper Deck, or what I assume Panini will do.

Just to dredge up a 3-month old topic, I came across this today on the Panini website: http://www.paniniamerica.net/authentication.cfm
Now, the page refers to "prime swatch material" - I don't know if that's a particular category of cards in particular products, but it looks to me as though Panini's actually already got something in place. Interesting.
Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...

What a fantastic bit of news. I hope this can become the norm, in time, rather than the exception.

If this works as we expect, expect UD to follow, or to disappear.

Some more stuff from the FAQ:
Is it possible to have my card authenticated?
Panini America has partnered with Eastman Kodak Company to employ KODAK TRACELESS System for Anticounterfeiting. Beginning with 2007 Playoff National Treasures and future products, each prime swatch of material will carry a unique and invisible marking that can be authenticated by Panini America through the KODAK TRACELESS system.[ More Info ]
Is the authentication process available for all cards?
Most of the counterfeiting is related to high-end products constructed with a prime swatch of material. For that reason we authenticate prime swatch material cards.
How do I verify the authenticity of my prime swatch material card?
Should any question arise as to the authenticity of any prime swatch, the owner will need to submit an authentication request online. After submitting your request, you will be provided with a ticket number and packing slip. The packing slip will need to be printed and included with your card(s) when you mail them. The card will be authenticated and documented.
What happens during the authentication process?
Each prime swatch material on the card is tested for Panini America DNA using the patented KODAY TRACELESS System. After successfully passing the test an image of the card is captured into our database along with a unique authentication number that can be referenced for future validation. The card is then placed into a protective covering where it is sealed and shipped back to the customer along with a Certificate of Authenticity.
Is there a fee for the Authentication service?
For each Authentication Service request a $10 fee will be charged for the first card and $5 for each card thereafter. Up to 25 cards may be entered per request. Please note the authentication service fee is non-refundable.
How can I look up authenticated cards?
After a card is authenticated, it is assigned an Authentication ID. You can search for authenticated cards by their Authentication ID by clicking here.
So I did a little looking at some of the Panini Certified preview pics and noticed:

On all three of those cards you see "Prime" on the front of the card. At first when I saw this I found it a little odd - then I learned about this authentication process, and it all makes sense. I'll be interested to see whether all of the cards will come with the "Prime" designation or if it'll be just the more obvious multi-colour/unique/crazy swatches & patches.
All in all, very cool!

Thanks for sharing. I look forward to seeing what they do. It seems like the prime swatches will fall in line with what they been doing in football for some time (PRIME SWATCHES).

Interesting Richard but that doesn't stop counterfeiting until it's too late...I.e someone who buys a card on the secondary Market and then sends it in for authentication could be disappointed big time if their card comes back stamped: not authentic...
Panini is however aware of the issue if they have developed this system

Depending on the length of the process, though, it could give them an avenue to return the card for a refund on the basis that they were sold an altered card. At a minimum, we know that if somebody buys something from Seller X on one of the forums or eBay, sends in the card, and it gets that stamp on it, Seller X is going to have some serious 'splainin to do.

This is very interesting information indeed...raises many questions but you are right about the serious 'splaning to do lol
