Babe Ruth. A Hero Or Not?

I know he was a Yankee and that automatically makes him legendary but in an honest opinion did his negative qualities outweight the positive? He was a drunk and constantly showed up to games hammered. Many people also think his "called shot" is a hoax. I know theres a reason this guys auto goes for $5000+ but are we idolizing a guy that doesnt deserve it?

We often idolize the flawed. It makes us feel a little better about ourselves also when we find out that someone wasnt perfect. Babe was great in my opinion because he played multiple positions and was good at many of them. I personally don't care if you show up hammered / roided / coked out or whatever. Just entertain me.

LOL.......all shot up with steroids and coked out of their mind. What a game that would be. 120 mph fastballs and guys hitting 900 ft HR's. That would be great.

Well I will bring up your other thread, you think Cobb was better than Mantle, but Cobb tried to injure people a lot. Do you hate the Yankees? Because it is ok to hurt people. But NOT ok to be drunk at games?

QwikFlipz this is the wrong thread. Please go back to my other thread to discuss the mantle cobb debate. I am a huge yankees fan, i just want to see if anyone else thinks we are idolizing the wrong people. I agree that babe was one of the greatest players to ever play the game but should it be to this extent? Should we really have to pay five grand for the guys signature?

He was a hero. Still is. But a big part of why his auto's are so expensive is a simple case of supply and demand. Everyone wants one, but there are not that many to be had.

On the other hand, I think Mickey Mantle's auto's are priced so high mostly because of his hero status, and less due to supply. He was retired before I was born, but he is still revered as one of biggest sports heroes of all time.

Aren't you the same guy who defended Ty Cobb even though he was racist and violent? And now you are saying Babe Ruth was bad? I think i have 714 reasons to disagree with you.
