Which Direction to Take My SP Authentic Future Watch Collection?

    Hey folks,

I figured I'd turn to the SCF community to help me decide what to do about my collection. Any input is appreciated.

As some of you know, earlier this year I started building the SP Authentic FW auto sets beginning in 02-03 through 09-10. Here is a brief status update:

    02/03: 15% done including Zetterberg
03/04: 15% done including Stajan, D Brown, Hudler, Zherdev
05/06: 80% done BUT not including Crosby, Ovechkin, Phaneuf, Vanek, Carter
06/07: 90% done including Malkin, Kopitar Stastny
    07/08: 20% done including Toews
08/09: 100% done including Stamkos and SP's: Filatov, Bailey, Sutter
09/10: 100% done, not including Wandell and Caputi Redemptions

My estimates are probably on the high side, but the 08/09 and 09/10 sets are completed.

In a moment of hobby weakness last month, I decided that while the 08/09 and 09/10 sets are nice, I wanted to liquidate my collection and sell sell sell, to help finance some other personal interests.

I then listed the 09/10 and 08/09 Sets on ebay at high BIN values just to see what kind of offers I would field.

On Saturday morning, a collector pulled the BIN trigger on the 09/10 set and made instant payment. While shocked at the amount of the sale, I was still a bit saddened that one of the sets that I had hand built was sold.

It made me think that without this 09/10 set, what is the purpose of continuing building the previous sets if I will eventually sell them as well.

So I am now at a crossroads- I consider myself primarily an autograph collector (ie I am not interested in most of the products panini will be releasing that are 1/2 memorabilia driven products). I've heard that the Hockey Rookie Contenders will be an AUTO/PATCH product, which sounds nice but is surely to make building an all auto rookie set more expensive than it was in the pass.

If you were me, what would you do???

In the interim, I am trying to list everything I own on ebay in my ebay store, so if you see anything you like or need, let me know and i usually hook up the nice SCF'rs with shipping discounts

so you're the person that listed the sets! I was watching both the 08-09 and 09-10 sets you listed and was also shocked someone bought the 09-10 for that price. you probably sold it for more than if you had sold it as singles, which is a rare feat.

You're right though if you have already sold the latest set, you might as well just liquidate the rest, although if I were you, I'd hold on to any stamkos spa you have for a bit longer. His cards still have huge upside (betting he will reach ovechkin/crosby heights, you never know but based on how he is playing, the potential is still there).

Thanks for your input and Yes, that was me. Part of the sale price has to do with the fact that I am willing to ship to Europe, whereas most sellers of large sets lack the sophistication to set up their ebay international selling preferences.

I have a Stamkos SPA up on ebay as well. I have it for a BIN of 175 and I've literally fielded 30 offers on it since I've listed it. My goal was to gross $150 on a sale of it as others have sold just recetnly for $172+s/h.

    Hmmm what to do.

Well I think you'll always finish of selling sets, but they are fun to collect:)

    continu to collect them:)

maybe stick to 05-06 for now:)

and sell the 08-09 to fund the rest

I guess it depends on what direction you want to take your collecting.

If you've decided that the FW autos are no longer something you want to put together - I guess do what you're doing.... liquidate what you've got, and move onto whatever the next project is. Use the proceeds of the sales to fund the next one.

But just becuase you've sold off the 09-10 set, what's stopping you from putting it together again? I suspect you could put 3/4s of the set together for pretty cheap. Pick away at the rest of the cards little by little. Maybe it takes you a couple of years to find everything at good prices..... but wouldn't be shocked if you could hand build another set for less than you sold that one for.

(Doing all that though, would mean you've still got interest in putting together all the FW sets as a project. If you've lost interest there, I say keep doing what you're doing).

This is definetly something I'd consider, but a majority of my sets are put together by pack busting. I guess I could consider putting back together the 09-10 set a long term project, but I'm leaning closer to liquidation......

I'd keep on going. Sometimes the journey is the best part. I'm sure you had a lot of fun putting those sets together, and although they are nice to have, it can be just as much fun to sell off and start a new project.

    +1

Move them now while people are still putting together *their* sets and get some nice PC stuff for yourself. I held a full 07-08 Black Diamond set for the better part of two years and woke up one day, looked at it, and said to myself that there about 207 cards here that I wouldn't consider PC unless they were part of the full set. So I broke it up, made some trade, and now have about 179 left. LOL

Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...

I've lost interest myself a few times. I'm still working on the Wings O6 03/04 master set and had really given up last year with 11 or so remaining. Suddenly in the last year I've come up with about 6 of those, and a little cheaper than I expected. It comes and goes. If you shelve it for awhile, it will always be there. If you sell it, its usually tough to aquire back. know how many people are kicking themselves for selling a '65 Cobra or 69' Camaro?
