I'm curious what stats of his stand out to you as being HOF worthy? He had a nice long career, but nothing in his stats screams "Hall of Famer!" I do agree with his signature, though. It's one of the better sigs out there. Those guys from the 40's always take their time with their pens.

For sending a ball, I'd consider these guys:

Stan Musial - A nice letter and $20 cash. Expect it to be returned if he won't sign for that amount. I think he's the best "bang for the buck" HOFer right now.
Whitey Ford - He's getting more grouchy about signing balls for less than $35, but still will from time to time.
Steve Carlton - $20 should do it.

I completely agree that everyone has a right to there own opinion, and I enjoy a spirited back and forth. However, posting his baseball-reference page goes against your argument for three glaring reasons.
1. He only had one season in which he lead the league in ANY offensive stats.
2. He only made 4 All Star games, meaning he didn't stand up well against contemporaries.
3. His career stats compare favorably to: Joe Adcock, Greg Luzinski, Ron Gant, Jack Clark.....
All really nice players who can have plaques at the Hall of Pretty Good. Again, he is great to our hobby, I have a ROY ball in my collection, but he doesn't get close to the Hall.

druce26 & Rockies, sorry Guys, I hadn't had a chance to get on the web the last several days (Mom's in the hospital). To try to counter is somewhat fruitless and a waste of time because of what I said about opinions and thank goodness no one on this site likely has a HOF vote. There are a number of what I would call marginal HOF'ers in the Hall already. As an example, I give you Tony Perez. He played 23 years (6 seasons longer than Sievers) and yes, he won "team related" World Seires titles but his stats are very close to Sievers if you take away 6 seasons. Longevity and WS tiltles are assets but there are some real deal HOF'ers that didn't play more than 10 years or win WS titles in the hall...

So your argument is that other people that don't deserve to get in have gotten in? Then you give us Tony Perez, who has 2700 career hits , and had 11 straight years of 90 plus RBIs? Somehow his "Team Related" titles should count? Start taking guys like Phil Rizzutto out if this is the case. You can argue all you want about longevity, but that is a testament of how good someone was over a longer period of time. Don Mattingly was a great ball player. Mattingly was not great great long enough to amass the numbers needed to be in the Hall of Fame. Perez has similarity scores that rate with Andre Dawson, Dave Parker, Al Kaline and Billy Williams. 3 of the 4 are Hall of Famers in that group, and a little better company than Jack Clark and Ron Gant. Oh yeah, definitely no attack. I always love talking about HOF voting and I was honestly curious what stats of Siever's were compelling enough for a possible HOF consideration. I hope that no one here felt attacked or disparaged by these remarks made by anyone. Especially since no one's comments so far have been mean or discourteous.

Just because we have differing opinions, that doesn't make your opinion any less valuable than mine. One of the tings I've really enjoyed about this forum over the last few years is that the discussions tend to be friendly and helpful. Even when opinions differ.
