Generic trading questions and a specific example.

I've been trading for almost 2 years now. Most of the time, it's BV for BV, even though I collect Pistons which don't sell for half BV. It's hard to trade a $20 GU or AU of someone (Kobe, LeBron, Jordan, etc.) that sell for almost 100% BV or higher when I'm getting a $20 Piston, or many Pistons that add up to $20, when I know if I HAD to sell my collection, I will have lost out. However, it's hard to convince someone that in the long run, they're still coming out even. I have a Pistons PC of 2560+ and it's approximate value is about $6000, but I've probably given up about $7000 in cards of Jordan, Kobe, LeBron, Bird, Russell, etc. (not all GU or AU). So how do you guys determine if a trade is fair? I know there are many factors (set, year, brand, type, value, condition, graded/non-graded, relation with the trader, etc.) but I'm trying to get some opinions and maybe pointers on how to get cards for my PC and not essentially get ripped off.

    Example:
I pulled a phenomenal card (in my eyes) about 3-4 days ago. I bought a $20 mix pack box from K-Mart and the Bonus Item inside was a 2007-08 Upper Deck Mini Jersey Autographs #13 Michael Jordan. I couldn't believe it. Now, there's no BV on it, I don't even know the run for it, and the only one I can find online is on the bay and someone's been trying to get rid of it for about a year. They have it up there for $1,599.00 and I know that is obscene. Therefore, I was trying to get about $400-$500 in trade for it. Preferably all Pistons, but I know the only people who might have that much in Pistons for trade (preferably all GU, AU or very low numbered) are probably Pistons collectors and aren't willing to give up that much for a Jordan AU. I do know someone that has about $300 worth of Pistons I need, all AU and GU, some low numbered, and they are willing to give me another $200-$300 in trade bait. And right now that's the best offer. I'm just not sure how to get the right trade bait due to my first point in this thread. I could probably get 4-5 decently priced cards including an $80 Magic Johnson, but I would probably want $120 in Pistons for the Magic. How should I go about picking out the trade bait? Small items to equal out on the Pistons trade, or should I try and go big and hope some traders will give me more BV for the higher cards? Thanks for your guys' opinions and thoughts.

When trading High-end cards, I NEVER trade a High-end for a bunch of low-end cards, even if they are pc. Always trade high-end for high-end, otherwise you'll easily get ripped off.

And if the high-end card is too valuable to trade, like the MJ you have, you could always sell it and buy the pc cards you want.

Sounds like the best thing to do is sale the Jordan (either ebay auction starting at $.99 or on here and start out asking $500dlvd) and then buy the Pistons cards you want.
Chances are nobody will have what you want in return, but cash will get you anything.

That's the unfortunate part with Pistons, there aren't many Pistons cards that High End. Right now, there are about 20 GU and AU cards (Pistons) I can get and they have quite a few high end cards of other players I can use for trade bait. I'm just not sure how to go about it. :) Thanks for your thoughts.

How can I avoid the fees? :) See, I'm afraid to do an auction because I only have bought on EBay and I don't want people to think I'm not credible for it and it only going for $150 or something. Know what I'm saying.

What kind of fees would there be for doing an auction on here? And is there anyway to do a "test" auction and let people know that? Or do an auction to where if it's below my asking price it's a null and void auction, but if it exceeds it, then they get it?

Book value is fairly arbitrary compared to what something can actually sell for. I think people should just be reasonable given all the information they have and come to amicable values for each card.

Recent example of how stupid BV is... Kevin Durant 08/09 SkyBox PMG Red: BV 40, Sold for $180. Kevin Durant 08/09 SkyBox PMG Green: No BV (I would assume BV 80 is fair given the Red), Sold for $660.

If you find it hard to deal with people or get what you want, you're almost always better selling your stuff on eBay and buying what you want.

Yeah, and that's exactly what I'm talking about. You could have the Durant at BV $40 and a Stackhouse at BV $10. The Durant goes for more than 100% BV and the Stackhouse goes for 25% BV. Well, most of my Pistons players, including HOFers, barely get 50% BV. I personally believe the Jordan can sell for about $500, which means BV would probably be around $400 or possibly less. I just don't want to put it out there, people be concerned with my credibility, and it only sell for $150 when if I had sold 2000 times or more on ebay, it would have gone for $600. Know what I'm saying?

I usually don't have a problem buying from people with low feedback if they look legit. If they have 100% as a buyer and their listing looks professional, I'm fine with it.

I think listing at .99 is free for the first 100 listings or something. Buy it now or best offer is .50 to list. Roughly speaking, I think they charge about 8% on auction style listings and 12% on buy it now.
