The Ovy-Kovy Conundrum
http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=342527
Ovechkin, who's mired in a bit of a slump - he's been held goal-less for the past four games and has just two in the past nine - was expectedly somber when he addressed the press after the game, but appeared to be in much better spirits not long after when Boudreau was talking to the media.
The incident didn't play well locally, where CSN Washington's Corey Masisak wrote "there was something that didn't feel right about the way Ovechkin and Kovalchuk were laughing and clearly having a good time while the other players showed little emotion after the contest."
Ovechkin was demoted to the third line during the second period by Boudreau and played the third period against the Devils on the second line.
A video of Boudreau's press briefing catches the coach glaring Ovechkin's way a couple of times with a displeased look on his face. When asked if it bothered him that two of his top players were happily fraternizing with a player from the opposing team after such a big loss, Boudreau paused before saying "I'll reserve my thoughts on that, if you don't mind."
Whether this incident simply blows over or becomes a big deal remains to be seen, but Washington media were openly wondering whether the team's captain should have put himself in a situation where people question his leadership and dedication.
Is this a media-only story, or is there something deeper at play here regarding Ovechkin?
Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...

I know if I were the coach I'd be ripping him a new ____ hole. Time to get serious OV & Semin or at least take it out of earshot.

Someone had written on TSN's comments that you wouldn't expect Toews or Crosby doing this and this is the reason why they have Cup rings and Ovie doesn't.
Very strong point.

Not talking to fellow countrymen after a game is what wins the Cup? And silly me for thinking it required a strong team effort and playing all out to win it. All Ovie has to do is tape his mouth shut and the Caps win a Cup. I'm glad someone made such a strong and intelligent point. Those TSN comments are just full of insightful gems!

I do agree with you. Some of their comments on TSN make them sound clueless, but this is a good statement.
By all means, players catching up is the norm but I thought it was just unprofessional right in front of your coach to see you laughing after a humilating 5-0 drubbing.

You'd have to be dumber than dirt to do what those two did. Take it back 30 feet and no one would have heard a thing.

The NHL is not the same as it was 30 years ago. The media needs to stop pretending that players on opposite teams can't be friends, or don't talk to each other.
That being said, OV should know better. No problem to meet up with his pal Kovy...... just do it where the media won't notice.... becuase of this very reason. They'll blow it up, and turn it into a big deal.

I don't dispute the unproffessionalism of it. But I don't think it's a factor in a team winning a Cup. It's what happens on the ice, not off of it. You can find unproffessionalism on the ice from Crosby, and he still has a ring. I don't think Ovie did the wrong thing, he just did it in the wrong place. Should he be called out for it? Is it really that big of a HOCKEY issue? Not at all. I find it rediculous that someone actually thinks this is the reason for not winning a Cup.

To be fair, laughing it up with a player on another team after the game is not being pointed at, as the reason they haven't won a cup...... just that it's a symptom of the problem: Ovechkin is too much of a clown, and doesn't take things seriously enough.
