Precious Metal Gems Michael Jordan Ruby
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...:X:RTQ:US:1123
He opened it up to international shippers. I sent him a msg to watch out for scammers from China. Send you the money in paypal, you ship, then they file a dispute on paypal and now you are out the card + paypal. As of this post it's approaching 1200.00

Not to be a buzzkill, but i'm so tired of seeing these cards get posted with there ridiculously high prices. I have no idea why these things became what they are today. It's a #ed insert covered with way too much foil that chips off badly. I'd take a Jordan 3 color Exquisite Limited Logos with a giant patch anyday over these and chances are by the time this auction ends I could probably get even more than that for what it's gonna go for.

These "numbered inserts" were way harder to pull than the "numbered inserts" of today for one.
For a Jordan collector this is pretty much one of the Holy Grails next to his RC.
The hobby has always been about 3 factors: rarity, quality of the card (design, beauty, condition, etc.), quality of the player. This card is at the top in all three categories hence the outrageous prices. Jordan Exquisite Auto Patches are excellent in quality of card and player, but they are not nearly as rare as one of these.
I think the hobby today has moved toward adding the factors of "auto" and "gu/patch" to those 3 factors that determine value which is fine and just how things are, but as those PMGs have shown, just the first 3 factors are enough to instill "value" into a card.
Not sure if you had one in person, but the foil on these are absolutely stunning. They do chip easily which is why if there is on in absolute mint condition then it's all the more worthy. I had one of Vinny Del Negro a while back, I was just amazed by how beautiful it was. It was fun to take it out and look at it often, can't say I would've done the same with a vinny del negro auto/patch.

i know that #ed inserts back then aren't the same is now (i collected back then as well) but these cards just don't do anything for me and to be completely honest i think they're kinda ugly looking
and the chipping doesn't help either.....of course rariety is also a factor but it's not like these were the only #ed inserts at the time either (showcase legacy collection, premium rubies, finest embossed refractors, ultra platinum)......And they just seemed a lot more rare because a)case production was a lot bigger than today (gotta remember that a lot more people bought basketball cards in the jordan era though) b)they didn't have ebay and many online forums were these kinds of cards surfaced.......so really i'm not really buying the rariety aspect either
not like what i'm saying will effect the cards from going for an absurd amount of money.......i just really don't get it

Yeah it's hard to get it if you don't find the card attractive, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder I guess.
Maybe it had just the right amount of "rarity", I think maybe those other cards you mentioned were TOO rare and probably most collectors didn't even know of, seen, or ever heard of those cards? However, collectors probably saw those Metal Gems of other players being pulled and a Jordan version of the PMG became coveted and the legend grew from there? Who knows. Does anyone else have any idea why this set became so coveted besides the design?
On a side note, I would have a hard time buying a card like this for that much money. I think the most I will ever spend on a card in this hobby would be for the 1999 Epic Sigs Wilt Chamberlain auto just so I can complete my set.

Yeah, besides it's great design (I mean even the base cards look awesome), I think a huge reason why these cards are so desired, is because of it's unique numbering system (first 10 are green, next 90 are red). With only 10 PMG greens of each player, this gradually became the Holy Grail for each player pc collector when it came to 90's inserts. However, since some PMG greens of certain pc players are almost impossible to afford and obtain, like MJ and Kobe, most player pc collectors turn to the next best thing, which is buying the PMG red, making that card highly desirable as well.
So it's combination of several things, it's great design, rarity, uniqueness, originality, nostalgia (You also have to take in account that many kids who didn't have the money back in the 90's, are high-end collectors now). But for the most part, I think you really have to take a look at these cards in person, in order to really appreciate them. As for the 08-09 PMG's though, I think those are complete garbage, and I really don't understand why those sell for so high, lol.
