    Tigers Caravan Stop Dilemma

Now before you give your opinions, please read all of the information I have available to me. Here's the simple stuff before I get into my problem.

Who: Armando Galarraga and Rafael Belliard
What: Guests at Great Lakes Bay Hispanic Leadership Institute graduation ceremonies
When: during the Detroit Tigers annual winter caravan
    Where: on my college campus

Now my problem is that tickets to this event cost $25, and I really only want to try for the autographs (which are not guaranteed by attending the event). I have no classes during this time, so I was wondering if I try before/after the event to see if Armando and/or Rafael will sign for me.

Since I know exactly where they are going to be, when the ceremony is, and as a student I have access to the area outside that room and surrounding areas, I was wondering what anybody thought my likelihood is that I would be successful in my attempt. Nobody else on campus (besides those in charge of the event) is aware of them coming based on what I have observed, so I would be out there by myself and whoever I choose to bring with me.

Anybody ever try something similar to this? How did it go? What are my realistic odds? (Please, oh please, don't bash me!)

Trust me, you don't want to open this can of worms. You are going to be LAMBASTED by about 20 self-righteous people any minute now.

For what it's worth, in my thread about crashing signings that you may or may not have read, several people PMed me saying they have done this often with mixed results. Some players (lesean mccoy and ray rice) signed for this person while many others told them to F off.

I would try it. You have nothing to lose and I probably wouldn't pay 25 for those 2, but free would be awesome!

If that is your understanding of what I wrote, than you misunderstood everything. This is not a signing, but rather a public appearance. Please re-read before you revise what you wrote, as nothing you said really helps me.

That's why I am a glad that I am a twins fan when the caravan comes up It is only $5 and you are gurrenteed to get a autograph from every person there. They even provide there own 5 by 7 if you don't have any cards for the participants.

That's a pretty subtle difference between a paid signing and an event where an athlete is going to be that you have to pay to get in.

I told you I think I would do it and I do think you have a pretty good chance at getting them.

There are 2 appearances in the Philly area at universities of Steve Garvey and Ryne Sandberg and I am planning on doing the same thing, if that is any indication for you.

Galarraga won't do inscriptions and he is spotty with sweet spotting. After the PG he signed an exclusive with Steiner. I had him 3on1, 2 on1, then 1on1 where i got a side panel.

No exp w/ Belliard so I can't comment on his personality.

If you are a student and know the layout, plus you are going to be there anyway; give it a shot. I wouldn't invest in any premium merchandise or expect more than 1 per. If I have an opportunity like the one you have I usually give it a try. The worst case scenario they say no, you go to class, not the end of the world. Best case they both sign, you go to class, it was a great day.

Yeah, but the Tigers don't charge an extra fee for autographs of any player: so we are even. That is an interesting concept though and wouldn't be surprised if the Tigers do future stops like this.

First off, I'd say I once knew the layout but that particular area has been under construction and might have changed during that time (even though it isn't done). And I do agree, I would not invest in any premium merchandise, especially after what you said about Armando. I knew he wouldn't sign any "Almost Perfect" photos, but I was not sure how picky his contract has been. I was going to bring a few select friends with me if they wanted to go, so I hope that I get some "bonus friend points" if they do sign.

It would be go to class, and then they say no - but I get your point. The only bad thing is that it delays my weekend.

I think I should mention that I expect a Detroit Tigers representative(s) to be w/ the players at all times, so would that have a negative effect on my chances? The Tigers have in the past scolded players not to sign for anybody, so maybe I'm better off trying to catch them in the parking lot, lol.

I once got an autograph from a guest speaker from my school. I was the only one, he has happy too and added great inscriptions. If you're not busy I say go for it, this is totally different than crashing a signing IMO.

The difference is the event is not an autograph even where others paid to stand in line and get a graph! I would give it a shot, if you are a fan of those guys. Galaraga may have another stint with the Mudhens this year or at least find a home in the bullpen.

I have found it that a) it is on the Tigers website b) it has sold out! c) that it will probably make the local newspaper any day now. I doubt I'll be the only one, but I just hope the Tigers security pack doesn't send somebody with them.

I'm a Tigers fan, of course I'm a fan! I believe that Armando is out of options after his stint in July last season. Also, he is up for arbatration, so I'm leaning towards him in a long relief type role. Chances are that I give this a shot, but I'm not expecting very promising results.
