Post Office question: Cost of Insurance

My question is how much does insurance cost to buy for mail? The seller on ebay says he charges insurance on anything bought over $50. I bought 2 cards. My total of both cards came to $51.06 They are charging me $13.00 for insurance. That seems high to me. I think its crap that if you buy multipul cards that are under $50, but add up to more than $50 combined you get charged insurance.

Way too high. It should be, I believe, no more than 3 dollars. Check USPS.com for specific info. Just do not pay 13 dollars for insurance!

Thanks, I just looked on the USPS website and it only cost $2.25 for insurance for $50.01-$100.00. I really want the cards I won, but don't want to be ripped off either. I emailed the seller telling him the right cost of insurance and asked for an adjustment, but I don't think they will do anything about it. If I don't pay them, I think they will give me negative feedback.

yes, that is way too high for UPS insurance. Sounds like he may be charging that to self insure the cards himself. Thats the only thing I can think of as to why he would try to charge $13 to insure $50.

example:

i just sent $600+ dollars of cards and put $700 insurance on it

it costed me $6.24 for the box and fillers and the $700 insurance costed me $4.25

for a total of $10.49 and there were almost 100 cards total

really? My wife said she didn't think ebay allowed people to do that also.

I got an email back from the seller, this is what they said:
Thanks for the link but I live in CANADA and ship with Canada Post, that is what I have to pay to get a signature and tracking from CANADA I know it is expensive but I have no cheaper alternative. I clearly state in the auction as well these policies..

So I understand that getting a signature and tracking will raise the cost. I'm not thrilled about it, but I don't want to lose the cards I won. I would never see them again.

If you are going to do insurance, then you should ask them specifically what the cost of insurance is from. If mailing in the US, I would pay more than the insurance cost of the USPS or whatever media he will be sending it to you because it's just not worth it.

I THINK(not certain) what the killer is, is actually tracking. If the auction clearly stated the charges there is not much you can do though.

Ebay has a ****** dumb policy of putting the seller at full responsibility if an auction doesn't arrive safely. The buyer has every right to request those amounts to get tracking and INS on the package(Canadian rates).
