Retired players not getting new cards......Steve Shields for example

When a player retires, card companies should not print their cards period. Watch real demand kick into the market place and BV begin to sell for what they are suggested as.

Thanks for all the comments - good & not so good. I meant to create discussion and I got it. I'll be honest, I've collected for a long time but I do not always look at these forums and threads as much as I maybe should - I mostly stick to Super-Collector and Show-And-Tell for the pretty pictures. Not to mention my favorite cards were mostly from McDonald's (all years) and Pinnacle & Pacific brands in the 90's so I haven't had much get excited about lately. ITG does have some cool releases such as BTP & H&P. Perhaps next years' BTP will have something for me to get excited about again.

i understand where you are coming from...i want more Rob Ray cards...he was my idol growing up...i know ITG made a card for him in last years Ultimate (maybe two years ago) and i freaked out....but with shields i thought maybe he would turn up in a "goalie fight" insert to be honest...i always thought about that...

i always thought it would be cool...and then you can bring back some classics like the snow/shields battle

A goalie fight insert (pictures of them actually fighting) with game used gloves/blockers would be UNREAL. Number them to 100 or even 499 and they'd be a hit with everyone because I mean common, who doesn't love a goalie fight?! Then make limited versions of goalies who have fought players and number them to 25... I would DIE for an Emery card that pictured him fighting Peters from a few years back. Add in some memorabilia and it'd be a PC for sure.

Good topic. I haven't read every post above, but from my collecting stand point, trying for Vezina Winners (GU and auto), just wanted to say i am as happy as a heck that Sauve has an auto in this years BTP. I jumped out of my seat, ITG is the best! I don't know if some players are not in sets due to not wanting to be in them OR the company not consdiering them OR contract/ money issues, not sure? There are 49 Vezina Winners to date and a handful do not have any GU or autos. I understand that many have since passd away so autos are not an option, but would love to see GU pieces from every winner. Sevigny hasn't had a card produced since 88-89 (which obviously means no autos or GU). Villemure has one stick card, that's it! I just hope Sauve gives ITG a jersey they can cut up in the future.

don't forget alot of players simply don't want to sign cards. of course it makes sense though that certain players are signing in sets year after year. the money's there, the relationship with the card company is there, and multi year contracts are probably signed anyway.

As a collector whose player is getting very close to retirement, I hope that the card companies don't take you up on your idea! I'm not collecting for "value"; I collect the cards because I enjoy it. Maybe I'm in the minority, but I'd collect even if we went back to the 1970s/80s and I only had one or two cards per year to chase!

At any rate, considering you still sometimes seen Osgood swatches from his time with the Islanders or Blues, I'd expect we'll still see his cards produced long after he retires.. lol

Give him some love as he is FAR more deserving of "Greats of the Game" than Darren Pang, or Frank Pietrangelo. To me, "Greats of the Game" should be a minimum of 200 career wins. I

I think they should have chosen a different title than "Greats of the Game", when I saw some of the players they chose.. Still, it was cool to see some of the cards there, for sure, even if I've NEVER heard of a "Darren Pang collector".. lol

I agree, the set should have had a different name. I had a good laugh with the person I was opening packs with when I read Darren Pang, "Greats of the Game" and then on the back "Career wins: 27." Really? 27 wins makes you a great of the game, and 218 wins by Irbe isn't enough?

As much as I love ITG, sometimes I don't get what they are thinking. What's next, a "Greats of the Game" card of Chris Clifford? He played in two career games, (and in the 1980s) so he must be one of the greats?!?!

I'm astonished that Irbe ISN'T in this year's BTP set.. There are a ton of other goalies that I'd put in long after him; surely one of them could have been bumped?
