Daly: Group interested in having NHL in Seattle

NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly told a Seattle television station there is a group from the area that has contacted the league about getting a team in town.

“We’ve had discussions with a group in Seattle,” Daly said. “Certainly [there are] people who are interested in having NHL hockey in Seattle. I would rather not get into specifics to be fair to that group, or the process.”

Right now there are two organizations seeking new ownership. One appears to be spoken for already -- Atlanta, by a group from Winnipeg -- but the Coyotes are still on the market. They won't be vacating Arizona yet as the city of Glendale agreed to cover much of the operating costs to keep the team in place for another season while the ownership search continues.

It's about a 2-hour drive from Vancouver to Seattle. I'm sure they'd get a good rivalry going in short order.

Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...

I don't think it'd be good for the Vancouver market.
    Here's why:
Seattle is all about baseball and football. Tickets would probably be cheap...Canuck fans would drive down there for all of the Canuck/seattle games, and when it'd be time to have a few Seattle/canuck games in Vancouver, there wouldn't be a big crowd cuz fans could get cheaper tickets in Seattle.

    That's just my opinion.

Yeah from what i can remember, the key arena was altered specifically for basketball so more seats could be added, the listed basketball capacity is 17,072. Reconverting back to hockey would need the removal of all of those seats, the capacity listed is just 11,000. A new arena would definitely be needed first.

The demand would far outweigh any issue for that. It wouldn't be a problem at all.

We still have a fairly new NHL-sized arena here in Kansas City without an anchor tenant. Our Central Hockey League team drew really good crowds this season and hockey is really starting to increase in popularity.
