Hi,
Best advice I can offer for this is to check out the 'TTM' part of the site.. There's some good information there on how to send cards to players to get then signed.. There's also an address database

Does it work pretty good? Do you get your card back in good health or is it destroyed?

TTM's do work well and the cards are normally returned in the condition you sent them in but you don't always get your cards back because not all players sign TTM's

I'm pretty sure it would be certain teams/players that don't send back.

i have never actually sent any TTM stuff on my own yet but from what ive heard the basic rule is don't send any cards worth to much (most use base cards or other lower value cards you wouldn't mind losing if you dont get it back). Also, be sure to send a signed and stamped envelope so all the player has to do is put the cards in and dump in the mail (nice and easy). The other key is to be patient, by the time the player gets it, signs it, returns,, could be one week or could be several months (depends on player/team/etc, more info usually in address database or success list).

When is the best time to send a card? now before Training Camp? or Later in the Year when they get back from a road trip...?

Right around this time of year is ideal. Players will all be returning to their clubs in the coming weeks and tackling the mail bags before hitting the ice for a new season.
Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...
