More bad luck, so frustrating!!!
Ok so today I checked my bank account balance via my phone, was thinking about getting me a nice box to restart my collection. Well instead I got a great Surprise, My account was overdrawn by $389. I went to my bank online and checked to see what happened, turns out someone wrote a check on my account dated jan 23 2010. the check was an old check from when I was stationed in England which I canceled because they were stolen, so I was dumbfounded so I called the bank. The first thing they say to me is that the check is out of sequence has a non current address and that it does not match my signature on file. I tell them yes I know this and I canceled those checks when they were stolen, come to find out according to my bank canceled checks are only canceled for a period of 6 months after which those exact checks can be used again.. really? Then there is the fact that the check had no endorsement from a bank or anything else on it, so they couldn't tell me where it was cashed. That makes no sense to me how do they not know who they paid. Anyways I put a fraud alert on my account disputed the check and filed a police report at the station. Will I ever get my collection going again. My mom and my girlfriend thought it would be a good idea to file the report in case this person attempts to write more checks. Sorry for the rant but I am so frustrated and upset, how can people do this, now I am broke thanks to some criminal. My friends if you have ever had your checks stolen or lost please be sure and change your account number because if what my bank is telling me is true, they can come back in six months and just use your checks anyways. Dang, that sucks. I would hassle the bank until they agree that this isn't something that you should suffer for. Remember to use your disabled veteran's status.
Love,
Bill

Bill,
I talked to two reps from my bank and a manager and they talked to me like I was the criminal, they were very rude. In the mean time while I wait to see if they give me my money bank my new family and I have to suffer, we have bills due and no way to pay them, I called the bill companies and they don't want to work with us, I just hope they dont start turning stuff off.

Sorry to hear buddy...this kind of thing is always a major hassle. I would definitely talk to someone else at the bank and let them know how you were treated. Keep talking to different people until you find someone who listens...I guarantee there is at least one person that cares that company employees are treating customers that way.
Hope everything works out for ya!

Man, that is awful...I thought "cancelled" meant "cancelled"...not "cancelled for a predetermined amount of time"...that's crazy. Good luck getting it all resolved!

I talked to the bank again today, they are still charging me overdraft fees, I am still being told that they do not know where this check was cashed or came from.. I asked them why I am still being charged overdraft fees and they had the nerve to say because you are overdrawn because of this check. I really feel like they are treating me like a criminal, I even asked to speak to a manager who was very rude as well. Now they are also telling me due to me filing a fraud case that my direct deposit may be delayed, I asked them how am I supposed to pay my rent and bills and they told me, until this situation is sorted out maybe you should ask Family and friends for help, what are they Serious?

Daniel I am soo sorry to hear this. This manager, is it the branch manager??? If not that is who you want to talk to.
if it is a national type bank there are people over the branch manager you can go to as well as the BBB. Cold also go to the attorney general of your state.....
Any types of veterans affiliations that can help you with this on your behalf?

Im not going to turn this into what it isnt but seriously dude?
Anyways - I work for a bank and i can tell you this is true. Most banks however can put an automatic renewal on the check.... Honestly i have no idea why this is but i have seen it from experience and it does happen from time to time. If you are with a respectable bank at all they will reverse all the OD Fees and give you credit for the check. Depending on the size of the check they should give you provisional credit then go after the criminals themselves.
You have to remember though we talk to people all the time who make up stories. You dont know how many times peoples debit cards are "stolen" and they didnt make that online purchase. I personally see probably 4-5 "fraud cases" per day. Most of them are cases of putting their debit card into a "free trial" online and getting hosed. That doesnt give them an excuse for poor treatment but i can say whenever i am dealing with a situation we have to look at both sides of it.
As far as using your vet status... I can say again from personal experience there is nothing that sets me off more than someone using a title or a name to try and get something at the bank. We treat everyone the same whether you are a vet, a millionaire, or a high schooler opening your first account. We do not break rules for anyone nor should we. Just go in, explain what happened, take copies of your checks (which they should have) and be patient.... I know it sucks but at least they have the fraud protection in there.... Some smaller credit unions you would be on your own trying to track down who did it and get your money back.
