Why is this even a story? He's going in for a special surgery, its not like he's getting his tonsils removed.lol People travel to see experts in other countries all the time.

Experts say the trend in global health care has just begun. Next year alone, an estimated 6 million Americans will travel abroad for surgery, according to a 2008 Deloitte study. "Medical care in countries such as India, Thailand and Singapore can cost as little as 10 percent of the cost of comparable care in the United States," the report found.

For certain surgeries I would expect people to come here b/c of the heart and brain specialists. I don't believe the U.S. is really better but has more specialists.

A little different...that's because of price, Canadians coming to America is because of quality and expediency of treatment.

The salary of a U.S. surgeon is five times that of a surgeon in India. "We [surgeons in India] want to make a profit, but we don't want to profiteer. We don't want squeeze people and I think American industries should also think that way," Jha said.

    How dare they do that.

Sure, but it says no more about the Canadian "system" that one of their ministers comes here for a treatment than 6M Americans going abroad says about the American "system."

I agree, basiclly most healthcare in developed nations is about the same. The biggest difference would be in the specialist.

Take a look at the exchange rate and maybe you will see why it is a 5th of the cost. :) It is like saying food is so much cheaper in India because you ate a lunch for $1. There is a reason for it. It's called the standard of living and exchange rate. Also, where do you think all the best Indian doctors go to medical school?

I've wrote about this a lot on SCF!

Of course these Americans will go over seas. These are the same Americans that refuse to get health care coverage when their healthy. Then when they get sick they complain that the system is too costly and go overseas. You will not find Americans going overseas that have full health care insurance.

It says it right in the article!

Sandra Giustina is a 61-year-old uninsured American.

It is sad that Americans go so long without health insurance while living with luxury things like nice cars, eating out, cell phones, cable TV, etc. Then when they get sick and need surgury are forced to go overseas.

Back on point! You have a government official who can afford to go to the US. While other Canadians are paying high taxes for health care and can't afford to go to the US, he is making the trip to save his hide. Must be nice to leave the average Canadian behind while taking care of himself. How can he afford this surgery? Because of the Canadian tax payers. Obviously, his government provided health care can't do what the capitalist American system can or he would have stayed in Canada.

Let me know when the next U.S. government official heads outside the U.S. for health care!
