You also need to look at the national security apparatus--part of the scope of government often overlooked--Bush added an entire new department-the expansion of government in this area was huge--i think we share similiar views, I'm just more critical of the previous administration, because that party is supposed to be a stalwart of conservatism (not neo-conservatism which is liberalism cloaked), and they have done a terrible job

That's the part I'm looking at. I don't criticize that expansion as much because I feel it is the federal government's place to provide for national security. I don't feel it is their place to provide health insurance and bailouts. I certainly don't agree with everything the Bush admin did in the name of national security, but at least it was towards a purpose I feel the federal government has a legitimate, constitutional claim to.

I pose the question if that expansion has actually made us safer---I feel with a resounding certainty it hasn't--it has eroded civil liberties, we are torturing people, and has been a strategic nightmare--worst, now neocons pass as conservatives-I'm not empathetic at all to the Bush administration

Like I said, I don't agree with everything done, but I much more agree with the purpose it was done. They were trying to do the right thing (protect the country), but went about it wrong. The Obama administration is trying to do the wrong thing altogether.
