The baseball collecting season kicks off with Topps unveiling its first set as MLB's only official card producer. The base cards are full or color and action, however the design harkens back to one Topps has used before.
There are a plethora of inserts in 2010 Topps. The most interesting would be The Cards Your Mom Threw Out series. This set highlights various cards throughout the history to Topps as reprints. There is an original back version as well. Other sets include Legendary Lineage which combines a former star with a current player and When They Were Young capturing veterans as kids.
There is one aspect this year that has the collecting world intrigued and buzzing. It's the Million Card Giveaway program. In random packs of 2010 Topps, collectors can find a MCG card with a code on the back. The code can be entered at www.toppsmillion.com. Once entered, the collector will receive one base card from Topps previously released and bought back by Topps. This includes cards such as the holy grail of Topps cards, the 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle. Collectors can opt to allow Topps to hold on to the cards or have them shipped (at a cost).
Topps has shown they intend to make 2010 a big year for baseball card collectors. The boxes of 2010 Topps Series 1 is loaded with goodies between inserts and chances at some real nice cards. However, having actual cards for the ToppsTown.com online world is getting old. When you look around, other companies utilize the "dummy" cards or the wrappers themselves to house codes. I would rather see this than lose out on a card, even a base card that puts me closer to completing a set. If these "cards" didn't count as one of my ten in a pack, that would be one thing but sadly they do. Also, seeing up to three inserts in the hobby pack is overkill. Part of the enjoyment of a chase set is actually chasing the cards. Thirty-six packs continues to be quite tedious of a venture to open. Perhaps a change to 24 packs with 15 cards is in order?
Once again, I'd like to thank our wonderful sponsors at Topps for giving us the opportunity to open and review this release. For more information on all their products, be sure to check them out at www.topps.com.Last edited by Enigma; 02-21-2010 at 07:48 PM.
