    BY:
    Dana Wakiji

The Atlanta Thrashers have signed former Red Wings defenseman Chris Chelios to a two-way contract.

Chelios, who turned 48 on Jan. 25, has five goals and 16 assists in 44 games with the Chicago Wolves of the AHL this season. His plus-minus rating is 35.

Chicago is the AHL affiliate of the Thrashers, who plan to keep Chelios with the Wolves until the end of their season (April 10). The Thrashers are two points out of the eighth and final playoff spot.

I can think of several reasons:

    1) Who better to mentor young d men.
    2) A relative cheap salary as he just wants to play.
    3) I think he personally can be a good 3 or 4th line compared to what most teams put out there. So why not take a flyer on him?
    4) He a good pr move in some regards as he a popular star, does a lot of stuff with the community, fans, team events.
