Numbered cards with serial #'s??

I don't understand. For instance, and I am new to this, but I have 2 Identical Peyton Manning cards. Both 2008. The front on 1 is Gold and the front on the other is red? 1 card has a serial # of 174/800 and a card # of s-11 and the other has a serial # of 016/400 with a card # of s-11??

Have another Manning with a serial # of 236/399 with a card # of 1. Does that mean there are 399 #1 cards out there and so on.......Very confusing. Is it best to collect cards with serial #'s?

ok i'll take a shot at tryin to explain this. some of the card companies out there produce inserts, parallels of the base set, or game used and auto cards that they serial number. when you pull a card that is serial numbered, that back number tells you exactly how many exist of that specific card. some companies produce just 1 or 2 #d sets, and some go completely overboard with the number of variations of the same card. hope that helped ya and if ya have any more questions, go ahead and shoot me a pm, i'll do my best to help ya out.

This confused me to at one time. Here is an example, someone correct me if I am wrong:

Example
Bowman 48 Basketball
1. Base Card of Magic Johnson, white border, no numbering, but Card number is 76.
2. A Parallel Set was produced with a blue border, all of which are numbered to 1948. So, there are only 1,948 of these Magic Johnson Blue cards out there. So you might pull a blue Border Magic Johnson, numbered 82/1948, but the card number will still be 76.
3. Then, there is a black parallel, numbered to 48. So again, you might get a Magic Johnson numbered 4/48, and the card number is still 76.

Get it?

So the parallel or numbered card is basically a variation of the actual base card.

*And to those who know Bowman 48, I just made up those numbers so don't get crazy and start correcting those :-)

This confuses the holy bejeezus out of me. So I have a Peyton Manning card that is #1. The serial # is 326/399. Your telling me the is the only #1 card out there???

no, there's other #1 cards out there of it that are identical to it, 398 other ones to be exact.
