What Must Be Done In the Next 30 Days If Upper Deck Is to Survive
In talking with my partners at Card Corner Club, who have been doing this whole sports collectibles reporting longer than any of us, these are some of the things we recently discussed that HAVE to happen to give Upper Deck a fighting chance.
First and foremost is to find a way to get Richard McWilliams out of the picture completely. He has bled the company dry and has made too many enemies with people that you cannot afford to have as enemies if you are to run a profitable sports collectibles company. An internal management buyout with some venture capital funding? Something, anything. You must cut off the head.
Close and sell the Carlsbad office. It is more of a prestige asset than a necessity, housing many offices for athlete spokes people that they can no longer afford.

I have been away from the hobby for over 10 years and I just recently got back into it.
I am blown away that Upper Deck is nearly left to nothing it seems.
Just shocked that they have lost their licensing for MLB and NBA if I am correct?
Shocking to me because I've been away and haven't followed any news on the sports collectible scene for a long time.
Guess I have a lot more to learn in my recent comeback.

I cant understand how a extremely profitable business like piecing a $300 used shirt into 100 cardboard pieces of paper and selling the result in $700 packs has thrown UD into near-banckruptcy. Oh, and they throw away World Of Warcraft license, YuGiOh license... 3 top million-making business down the flush. Well Done. O_O
I'll miss them, but "greedy rips the bag" as we say here in Spain, maybe its a classic motto like that in USA?

I really like Upper Deck back in 90's. They used to get the best photo and design the all products. And in leading of new concept every year.
But that Exquisite is totally way out of reach for a lot of young collectors. Personally, when a pack of card goes over $10, I already stop buying pack/box. I know some people will never stop breaking boxes, but this is not me.

They could always sell to Panini. Which if they keep struggling like they are, I could see happening for sure.

As of Dec. 2009 - their offices are 50% owned by CORPORATE PROPERTY ASSOCIATES - Any news on a move, sale or problem meeting obligations should come from that company as they are semi-public (Pink Sheet: ZZCPP)
