2009-10 spgu, what do you think?

I have been watching the new spgu with great interest, even being part of the case break, but the more I look at it the more it reminds me of an over priced Artifacts. With all the parallels and single dual, triple etc. jersey cards is it really worth the money. To me the two (Artifacts and SPGU) have become redundant. So having said that and there have been some great patch cards, what is others opinions?
Just as a side note for those who don't know, I am a huge Shea Weber fan but this newest edition from Upperdeck has made me realize that too much is too much. So having said that I am going to slow my collecting down to just base, possible base parallels, and auto cards of him. With Panini coming on board for next year I can see this is just going to get ridiculously expensive.

I have said this product is terrible for about oh, forever now.

Easily my least favorite UD product. The only thing decent in it is the Letter Marks/ Number Marks cards. They are what they are, manufactured and autographed, that's neat and what you see is what you get.

All the dime-sized game used (do we really know?) is a load of crud and stick autos galore blow chunks.

Did I mention this product is terrible?

I love it. SPGU has always treated me well, and has a much better selection of patches and better player pairings than artifacts. Card design is also 10 times better than artifacts.

Of course, I would rather have more hard signed product...but if all of the stuff in SPGU was hard signed it would be as pricey as the CUP. The team/letter/nation auto marks are also the best manufactured patch cards on the market and this year they have very clean hard autos.

I'm also much more of a memorabilia guy than an auto guy and don't care about the rookies, so SPGU is a favorite of mine.

Base parallels are just a throw in (I don't think they should be in any high end product), but at least the memorabilia parallels in SPGU upgrade from a jersey version to a patch version. ITG's best product only slaps a different serial number on the slab of their /24 /9 /1 Ultimate cards without any real difference in card quality or even a differnt serial number on the card.

My only reccomendation would be to increase the print run on the SP rookies since they are nothing special and then drop the price of the box a little.

well artifacts is way cheaper the SPGU. well at my LCS i think artifacts was like 99.95 and SPGU was like 200 or close to there. i know it wasn't cheap.
but i personally think that boxes are little expensive like what is the cup like 500-600 dollars like i don't think i would even waste that money even if i was rich.

but i personally think that boxes are little expensive like what is the cup like 500-600 dollars like i don't think i would even waste that money even if i was rich.

There is a reason for the price. It is also why The Cup sells individual cards better than SPGU which is better than Artifacts

Normally I'm all for bashing UD, but I think this year's SPGU is better than I expected it to be. The swatches on the Authentic Fabrics are bigger than before, the player selection seems really good, and it looks as though there's a good deal of value in each box. I've seen some great patches and autos pulled so far, as well as fight straps and the like.

If you think Panini is going to make a big difference next year, I'm just not so sure. They have put out some ok product so far, but I think there are way too many of their cards that are just poorly designed. A number of their basketball and football patches are hidden beneath die cut windows that say "NBA" or "NFL". You can barely see what color the patch is, it's so badly obscured by small window. Here's hoping that doesn't happen with hockey product next year.

I agree Blane - SPGU doesn't do anything really special that other sets in the same price range don't already do, and usually for cheaper. The designs on many of the cards are unattractive - I think that every year since I've been in the hobby the RCs have gotten uglier - and for the price point you don't get your value back unless you hit a major player auto/memorabilia card. While I generally like it when a product has significant numbers of my favourite player, SPGU is murder on a player collector's status. I don't know how many Weber cards there are in this year's set, but I'd imagine plenty, including plenty of those always-delightful multi-player /10 or less. This is what happens when your guy can rip holes in the net with his slapshot.
