2009-10 SPGU Is a High Priced Gamble

2009-10 SP Game Used Hockey is out and for the most part looks great but can it deliver considering the price tag is around $144 dollars? That’s a high price tag for a box that comes with 6 packs, three cards per pack (unless you get a hot pack, they had six cards).

Every pack delivers a game-used or autograph card. I love guaranteed hits, but at $24 a pack, I can’t tell you buying this by the pack is the answer. To me it’s by the box or nothing.

My first great card was a “Letter Marks” card of Flyers burgeoning star, Claude Giroux. He’s come on strong in the second half of the season and he’s a big reason that his team should make the playoffs despite having seven different goalies on the roster. The card is numbered to just 50, the auto is on the letter and it’s very neat, and his picture is on the back. Great card, great start.

They seem to have done really well with the hits this year as opposed to last year. I've seen just a couple of breaks that did not pan out. Nearly every box has had one really big hit.

My two boxes yielded a Gretzky Patch /35 and a Brodeur Number Marks auto /25.

I've seen prices a lot worst than $150 a box over the years. SPGU is always a gamble. You're usually looking at 4 jersey cards that go in the $2 bin. You are trying to get your value for the box out of the auto and the special game used card. It's been this way every year and will continue to be this way in the future.

So far I've seen only one or two so-so boxes. I bought another one today and had 3 big hits.

Patrick Berglund Marks of a Nation Auto /50
Crosby / Fleury Dual Jersey /100
Gil Perrault Famous Fight straps /10

I think I am going to have to buck up and give a box or two a try.
