Is Upper Deck in real trouble?
I've read a few threads that have mentioned UD having some major problems. I know they lost the NBA and NFL rights recently. What is the story with UD? Will they close shop or are these just rumors? Thanks

Do I think they are in trouble? Absolutely. Do I think they will cease to exist within a few years? Absolutely not. Why? Because they still have one thing that every basketball collector wants to get their hands on - Michael Jordan autographs.

I agree with Nathan. I don't think they will close doors, but losing their football license is going to hurt.

Even Mike won't keep them afloat coz they lost their rights to produce b-ball nba cards

They cannot produce NBA-licensed cards. Doesn't mean they cannot produce basketball cards. They still have Jordan under contract, and they are still releasing sets, despite losing their NBA license - it's been in the last week or two that they released the Greats of the Game set. They are definitely going to be hurt by losing those licenses, but I don't believe they will go belly-up, because they still have the "holy grail" of all basketball autographers under contract.

they can't pay any signers reportedly. so if they can't pay MJ, he will be gone.
PS Greats of the Game set is terrible!

I would bet that's any current NBA players...I don't see how they wouldn't be able to pay non-NBAers, whether retired or college...not sure on that, but I don't see how any legal terms could be like that.
Oh, I'm not saying GotG is great (no pun intended)...just saying that they have released sets recently. I think UD has made alot of bad decisions - and those will hurt them. I just don't see them going under with Jordan still under contract.

Theres not a difference between paying players under NBAPA or retired players... they can't pay either.
Plus, you know they have a Jordan auto pen :)
