2010-2011 Panani
With Panani coming out next season for the first time in my memory I have been doing some research. But throughout this I still have a few questions.
1. Are their cards good quality like UD's were?
2. Are prices reasonable and should I expect them to be like UD's prices?
3. What did their cards look like when they last had hockey cards?
4. Will they be available in Canada?
If I can get these questions answered it would be a great help.
Thanks in advance,
Alexander

I'll give my answers but there won't be much insight.
1. Ud sucks. Their quality was crap. I think a three year old could make better quality cards with less damage
2. I expect a wide array of products with high and low prices.
3. Not sure as I don't really know what they made back then
4. Yes
BTW...ITG>all.

A lot of Panini's success will also depend on whom they sign contracts with for autographs as well as what type of game used material they purchase and how they incorporate them into cards.
I am really interested to see what approach they take to creating hockey sets.

As much as UD has irritated me in the past, from what I've seen from Panini makes UD's design and price points look much more appealing. Most of the designs I've seen on Panini's football, baseball, and basketball cards are recycled from product to product and really look like low end junk, even their higher end stuff. Their game used cards look cheap, and they sell a $130 product(Playoff Contenders) and the hit of the box is 1, I repeat, 1 hard signed auto, the rest are sticker. Why would I buy a product like that when I can buy a box of SP Authentic and get 3 hard signed auto's when that's what I'm paying for, the autographs. They also like to cram their products with parallels, I mean if you think UD is bad, having 3 different parallels of your player to chase, I've seen Panini products where it seems like there is a /500, /250, /150, /100, /75, /50, /25, /10, /5, 1/1.

They'll probably be hit and miss products like everything else, but at least its licensed and probably free of crappy $8 Istock hockey illustrations. Hope they resurrect some of the older series sets etc.

panini football was all of previous leaf products in years past until 08. the main problem this year people have had is certified 90 a box 10 packs 4-5 gu or auto, looks identical to limited, 100 a box, 5 cards?? maybe 6 all serial numbered 2 autos i believe 1 being a rookie, very similar desgins between the 2, and both are eerily similar to the national treasures desgins which is 5 cards 450 a box. that was the biggest issue the desgins were eerily similar and it seemed national treasures desgin was way cheaper than previous years when leaf ran it, i personally didnt like the NT set this yr compared to others. as for the company i will buy their products the cards will be about the same as UD prices and will have all kinds of sets from low to high

1. See what others have said - I can't really comment on their other products because I don't do the other sports.
2. You'll likely see a full range of products out there, just like we do with Upper Deck.
3. Panini itself has never had a hockey card license; however, when the other brands went out of business Panini bought up a large number of them. This is actually cited as a major reason that the NHL/PA gave Panini a shared license: name brand recognition. Donruss, Score, Pacific, Crown Royale, etc. were all bought by Panini. Now, that said, it's probably not that fair to compare hockey cards in 2010 to cards made in 2002. Take a look at a car today and its technology blows away anything made 8-10 years ago, if you catch my drift. Sure it's still cardboard but I'd expect to see marked improvement in all aspects over the older products.
4. Of course. Not selling hockey cards in Canada would be instant death for the company.
Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...

Panini's designs are not as nice as UD but really not bad imo. UD has recycled so much of their recent designs to the point where it's simply refreshing to be going after some different looking cards.
To be fair also Panini hasnt really even finished one year yet so let's wait until after the season to do a assessment.

1. best to take a wait and see approach
2. prices will probably be competitive to UD and ITG.
3. this one's up in the air. ALOT of people say they are very recycled across the board on ALL of their designs. then again, their "name brand recognition" doesn't have me excited either -- Donruss, Score, Pacific, Pinnacle? i can think of possibly 3-4 sets total from those companies i liked but if they couldn't hack it then, i don't see it being too different now.
4. it's hockey; it'd be suicidal for them not to make it available in Canada.

Since I'm too lazy to search around; does anyone have any scans of cards Panini has done with their other licenses?
I'm a bit curious to see how their designs look, and such. I'm not familiar with Panini outside of their stickers.
