Frankie says BJ rematch probably a go ...
- EDGAR CONFIRMS PENN REMATCH LOOKS LIKELY
Tuesday, April 20, 2010 - by Damon Martin - MMAWeekly.com
The decision on who new UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar will fight for his first defense should be coming soon. It looks like it's going to be a rematch with the fighter he beat to get the title earlier this month.
Former champion B.J. Penn had commented just after the fight that the UFC had already approached him about a potential second fight with Edgar later this year, and the new king at 155 pounds had heard much the same thing.
"There's been talks, there's definitely been talks," Edgar told MMAWeekly Radio. "I haven't signed anything, so when I sign I'll definitely let you know."
Edgar admits that he would love the chance to get back at the fighter who holds the only win over him in his career in a title defense, but understands why Penn would get the first crack at his belt.
"I really wouldn't mind fighting Gray (Maynard) just to avenge that loss. Not that there's any love lost or anything like that, but just for the fact of it's just the chance to avenge the loss," Edgar stated.
"If it's B.J., it's B.J. If anybody deserves a rematch right away I guess it would be him, you know?"
As far as timing for the lightweight title fight, all signs at this point are leading to a late summer bout, possibly headlining the upcoming UFC show in Boston on Aug. 28.
Following the fight, Edgar told MMAWeekly Radio that he had contracted a small case of staph infection, but after treatment he would soon be back in the gym, and a fight in the late part of the summer would work well for him.
"I think late summer would be cool. My wife is actually due to give birth in June, mid to early June, something like that, so late summer would be okay," said Edgar. "(It would) be a little crunch time, but I plan on going back in the gym on Monday."
Stay tuned to MMAWeekly.com. We’ll have more details about the final bout decision as they become available.

I dunno but something about this being the headlining fight for Boston wouldn't work in my opinion. Especially because Kenny Florian and Joe Lauzon will both be fighting in that event, according to their twitters. Both of those are lightweights who fight main card fights. We cant swallow a main card with lightweights.

i am strongly opposed to immediate rematches unless the decision was highly questionable like the machida/rua fight. I think it stalls the division and if anything keeps it from being interesting.
In my opinion, with no facts to back it up, I think BJ wants to avenge the loss and then he will jump to welterweight and the leave the title up for grabs. He had said before the edgar fight that he was strongly considering a permanent move up if he won. I think he beats edgar and then gives up the title which makes him look better but is definitely not what is best for the division.

I'm usually not for immediate rematches, but they are warranted for cases like this and Shogun/Machida. Word is that BJ was pretty sick and anyone that saw that fight could tell that there was something wrong with him. Still, I thought he won that fight 3 rounds to 2, but it was very close. I don't know what the judge who scored it 50-45 was watching, but he should never be allowed to judge MMA again. That said, Frankie did dictate the pace and made BJ fight his fight, so props to him for that.

I'm all for an immediate rematch here. Both fighters proved to be well matched on their feet and i appreciate a good stand-up war. I have a feeling though that BJ will be looking to use his ground game much more in the rematch.
I also agree that this fight really can't hold a PPV main event by itself but with the addition of another high-profile fight, sort of like the addition of Silva-Griffin at UFC 101, it will do just fine. Either way, i have every intention of "Shipping up to Boston" for this one.

I had BJ losing that fight by 3-4 rounds. I think he won the first round and likely loss the next four rounds. I could see 2 rounds going either way.
I think this will be a good rematch, but feel it will be a repeat for Edgar UNLESS BJ can take the fight to the ground. Edgar is too quick standing.
