    How many stamps?

How do you know how many stamps to place on the envelope that will be returned to you?

Depends on the weight of the stuff that will be returned to you. If it's just a letter or a card in a toploader, then 1 stamp would do. If it's 2 toploader, then you should use 2 stamps. Again, it depends on the weight.

I sent 8 cards to Mike Cameron with one stamp and it came back with no postage due. If you want to save stamps, do not use a top loader.
