Super rare Lebron Rookie auto!

So, middle-aged football collector walks into local hobby store (Missouri), buys three packs of 09 SP Authentic. Has $2 change, decides what the heck, buys two loose packs of older 03-04 MVP basketball. First pack, hits this card.

My buddy, basketball collector, is drooling. This guy says nice pull, wish I did basketball. My buddy says I would gladly buy you some football for the card. The guy asks if he will purchase him the two unopened boxes of SP Authentic that are left. My buddy says he can't do that- he would do the two unopened boxes, finish off the last 10 or so packs of the opened box, and give him $100 more cash. This guy asks if he's serious, my buddy says absolutely.

Now, my friend has no idea what this card would fetch. It doesn't book, he calls me, I tell him I've never seen one. We mull it over, and decide $400 is the best he can do (remember, this guy was only asking for about $250).

He gets home, decides to test the ebay BIN to see what offers roll in, gauge a value. Within 2 hours, he has 28 watchers and an offer of $900. The offer comes from a guy that says he has two, a BGS 9.5 and a BGS 9. He said he had called UD a few years ago to get a print run, and they said below 10. He said he had made up his mind to pick up any he ever saw, and that he gave over $1000 on each of the ones he had.

And before anyone complains about my friend profiting off someone who knew less about basketball, he gave him almost double what he was asking on a card neither of us had any idea what it would go for- and the guy pulled a Mark Sanchez SP Authentic Super Patch auto #/99 in his second box :-) Not bad for his initial $2.

I think it's more that awful sticker which would make ANY card disgusting. Thank God UD stopped using them, talk about an eye sore...

Very nice! I bought two boxes of 03-04 UD MVP and did not pull an auto. Most of the auto's are SPed to less than 50, according to UD and Beckett.

I was trying to put the master set together but gave up on it because it was not my favorite design and it was too tough (and expensive) to get all the auto's.
