Just another quick question(s) for you guys, just to get different opinions really...
Do you guys collect certain players knowing full well you may not complete that player/set, or do you set out to get every card going?
I have a couple of little projects in mind;
Maybe see if I can get a card for every player that participated in the Canadian Olympic team that won gold in 2010, but obviously each of the 23 cards has to be the same. That goes without saying. I spent almost a year in Canada last year and will always have a special place in me.
Try and get every card going of Scottie Upshall, who is my favourite player (tied with Simon Gagne), or get a card for each year of his career.
Just collect Game Used stuff from Gagne, and see how far I can go. I know he has a lot of cards available (and some real nice ones at that), but I don't have as much money/budget as oppose to a lot of people on here to go out and get The Cup cards et al.
Also, it would be nice to collect some rookies/prospects that may gain in value in the future. Could you guys maybe give me some advice on who to look out for and what to look out for.
Any help is much appreciated!!Last edited by stop__dreaming; 05-18-2010 at 07:24 AM.

I collect Ryan Miller and Gil Perreault, full well knowing that I would never have all their cards. I get the ones that are important to me...rookies, interesting Game Used...the lettermarks, autos, interesting pieces, nice patches...stuff like that. Tyler Myers now with him being the new stud on the block in Buffalo. And each year, I try to put together a subset...I put together the 08-09 OPC Winter Classic set, cause I went. I put together the 09-10 OPC Canadian Heroes (FOIL) set cause I am Canadian and love Team Canada Hockey...that is where I get me collecting habits from. I would pick a player or two, stick to them, and go with it...do some set building...whatever is FUN...or else it will just bore you and end up like a job instead of a hobby! Happy collecting, and once you decide, lmk. Maybe I can help you out with a few trades.

Welcome to SCF!
Personally, I love having a collection of a specific player because, unlike a set, it gives you a project that is on going year after year since the players have cards from years back. While you will be able to get quite a bit of the cards over time, it's nearly impossible to get a full collection of any player because of all of the 1/1s out there.
The Team Canada idea is pretty cool. Some others have tried getting an auto of every played for Canada or the US. I don't think there is a set that has an auto of every 2010 Canadian Olympian as of yet, but you could have a mixture of sets for your collection. Or, Be A Player might have autos of all of the Canadian whenever it is released.
As for rookies and prospects, I love collection some of those as well. The main RCs that are typically considered the foundation to anyones collection are the UD Young Guns and SP Authentic Future Watch RCs. While it is speculative and will vary from person to person on who to look out for, I would say that Evander Kane, and James Van Riemsdyk are fairly cheap right now considering they've had excellent production. Others would be James Neal, Michael Frolik, Claude Giroux, Jordan Eberle (his won't be cheap), and PK Subban (won't be cheap either). Eberle and Subban will likely be in the 2010-11 sets.

The standard rookie collection in the hobby is the Upper Deck Series 1 and Series 2 Young Guns. From there you can go lower or higher than that. As for names:
Currently hotter than a sack of potatoes:
- Jaroslav Halak
- Steven Stamkos
- Drew Doughty
- Matt Duchene (could be wrong)
- Tyler Myers (could be wrong)
- Tuuka Rask (spelling?)
- Jimmy Howard (could be wrong)
- Dustin Byfuglien (spelling?)
- PK Subban
- Sidney Crosby
- Alexander Ovechkin
- Evgeni Malkin
- Patrick Kane
- Jonathan Toews
- Antti Niemi
- Taylor Hall (soon-to-be)
- Tyler Seguin (soon-to-be)
The rest are stable, but there are many to choose from. John Tavares - in my opinion - is still a good investment and could be the "steal of the summer" sort of speak.

I found some Team Canada cards on eBay fairly cheap but not everyone. Might wait and see what they may bring out in the future!
The UD Young Guns cards I've heard are pretty good to get. I've seen Tyler Myers ones go for quite a bit. Might look into those. I like Evander Kane and van Riemsdyk, and also Duchene. The ITG auto cards are beautiful looking and may look into some of those. Would the ITG auto and patch cards be a pretty good investment in your opinion?
Had a peak at Eberle's, and you're right, haha, not cheap! Is that because there's not much production of him and Subban right now? I'm a massive fan of Giroux, but can imagine his sets would get expensive.
Thanks for the tips!

I have no chance, as in cash, to get Stamkos, Crosby or Ovechkin, haha.
I've heard Tavares has been 'down' lately which is one of the reasons I was looking into getting a couple of his!
